Abstract Schistosoma mansoni is a parasitic helminth that vectored through freshwater snails. While the anti-schistosome defense of South American snail, Biomphalaria glabrata , well studied, little known about immune response African sudanica . We measured expression five candidate genes in B. 8, 24, and 72 hours post-exposure to S. using reverse transcription quantitative PCR. Expression patterns resistant snails were compared susceptible those sham exposed. also assessed how diet (lettuce vs. pellet) affected three genes, given prior findings pellet-fed more Results indicated constitutively expressed higher levels superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) than snails, consistent with Parasite-induced occurred at 8 SOD1, biomphalysin, thioester protein (TEP1), granulin (GRN); however, for biomphalysin TEP1, induced was only detected At 24 hours, increased exposed all decreased controls. GRN supports hypothesis these play role defense, however does not necessarily yield clearance SOD1 lettuce-fed their greater resistance. Together, results demonstrate conserved unique aspects response.
