Very preterm (VPT) birth is a major risk condition for child development and parental wellbeing, mainly due to multiple sources of stress (e.g., separation pain exposure) during the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) stay. Early video-feedback (VF) interventions proved effective in promoting VOT infants' wellbeing. Electroencephalography (EEG) hyperscanning allows assessment brain-to-brain co-regulation live interaction between infants parents, offering promising insights into mechanisms behind interactive benefits early VF interventions. This study investigates inter-brain synchronization during a collaborative visual search task performed in Virtual Reality (VR), and compares it to the same executed real-world environment. Previous research has demonstrated that settings leads measurable neural synchrony, as captured through EEG hyperscanning. However, limited work explored whether similar dynamics occur immersive VR. In this study, we recorded hyperscanning data from participant pairs engaged joint task, conducted both VR physical settings. Our results reveal occurred condition at levels comparable real world. Furthermore, greater synchrony was positively correlated with better performance across conditions. These findings demonstrate is viable platform for studying tasks, support its use future team-based neuroscience simulated environments.

Abstract It is well established that parent–child dyadic synchrony (e.g., mutual emotions, behaviors) can support development across cognitive and socioemotional domains. The advent of simultaneous two‐brain hyperscanning (i.e., measuring the brain activity two individuals at same time) allows further insight into neural . In this article, we review 16 recent studies naturalistic, brain‐to‐brain synchrony, finding relations with nature interactions (collaborative vs. competitive, parent stranger), proximal social cues (gaze, affect, touch, reciprocity), child‐level variables (irritability, self‐regulation), environmental factors (parental stress, family cohesion, adversity). We then discuss how may provide a biological mechanism for refining broader theories on developmental benefits synchrony. also highlight critical areas future study, including examining trajectories longitudinally, more diverse participants interaction contexts, studying caregivers beyond mothers other members, teachers). conclude an exciting important window understanding caregiver–child supports children's development.

Abstract Temporal coordination during infant-caregiver social interaction is thought to be crucial for supporting early language acquisition and cognitive development. Despite a growing prevalence of theories suggesting that increased inter-brain synchrony associates with many key aspects interactions such as mutual gaze, little known about how this arises Here, we investigated the role gaze onsets potential driver synchrony. We extracted dual EEG activity around naturally occurring in N=55 dyads (mean age 12 months). differentiated between two types onset, depending on each partners’ role. ‘Sender’ were defined at time when either adult or infant made shift towards their partner was already looking them (mutual) not (non-mutual). ‘Receiver’ Contrary our hypothesis found that, naturalistic interaction, both non-mutual associated changes sender, but receiver’s brain increases above baseline. Further, mutual, compared inter Overall, results suggest effects are strongest intra-brain level, ‘sender’ ‘receiver’ gaze.

Hyperscanning approaches to human neuroscience aim uncover the neural mechanisms of social interaction. They have been largely guided by expectation that increased levels engagement between two persons will be supported higher inter-brain synchrony (IBS). A common approach measuring IBS is phase in context EEG hyperscanning. Yet growing number experimental findings does not yield a straightforward interpretation, which has prompted critical reflections about field’s theoretical and methodological principles. In this perspective piece, we make conceptual contribution debate considering role possibly overlooked effect desynchronization (IBD), as for example measured decreased synchrony. principled reason expect comes from recent proposal irruption theory, operationalizes efficacy person’s subjective involvement behavior generation terms entropy. Abstract Successful social interactions between mothers and children are hypothesised to play a significant role in child's social, cognitive language development. Earlier research has confirmed, through structured experimental paradigms, that these could be underpinned by coordinated neural activity. Nevertheless, the extent of synchrony during real‐life, ecologically valid their remains largely unexplored. In this study, we investigated mother–child inter‐brain using naturalistic free‐play paradigm. We also examined relationship synchrony, verbal communication patterns personality traits further understand underpinnings brain synchrony. Twelve aged 3 5 years old participated study. Neural dyads were measured bilaterally over frontal temporal areas functional Near Infra‐red Spectroscopy (fNIRS) whilst asked with child‐friendly toys together (interactive condition) separately (independent condition). Communication captured via video recordings conversational turns coded. Compared independent condition, showed increased interactive condition across prefrontal cortex temporo‐parietal junction. There was no found turn‐taking each member dyad. Overall, demonstrate feasibility measuring environment. These findings can inform future study designs assess parents pre‐lingual and/or needs.
