Background: Exposure to adversity in childhood is a risk factor for lifetime mental health problems. Altered pace of biological ageing, as measured through pubertal timing, one potential explanatory mechanism this risk. This study examined whether timing mediated the association between (threat and deprivation) adolescent problems (internalizing externalizing), was moderated by sex. Methods: Aims were using Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study, large population representative sample from United States. Data used three timepoints across ages 9- 14- years. Latent scores confirmatory analysis operationalized exposure threat deprivation. Bayesian mixed-effects regression models tested early adolescence effects on later internalizing externalizing Sex moderator pathway. Results: Both deprivation associated with symptoms. Threat, but not deprivation, earlier which differences only observed direct problems, no such present mediating pathways. Conclusions: Adversity had similar ageing (as indexed timing) males females. However, impact appears depend dimension experienced, increasing timing.

Anhedonia, or diminished pleasure and motivation, is a symptom of severe mental illness (e.g., depressive disorder, bipolar schizophrenia) that emerges during adolescence. Anhedonia pernicious related to social impairments, treatment resistance, suicide. As the mechanisms anhedonia are postulated include frontostriatal circuitry dopamine neuromodulatory system, development plasticity these systems vulnerable period adolescence, as well their sensitivity pubertal hormones, suggest maturation could play role in anhedonia. This review takes developmental perspective, considering possibility context adolescent development, with childhood adversity chronic inflammation influencing neural reward accelerate anhedonia's progression. Here, we relevant extant literature on components this model directions for future research.

Peer victimization and dating violence are associated with poor psychosocial adjustment. However, possible gender differences in victimized adolescents both contexts have not been explored. This study aims to analyze how types of related five indicators adjustment (depressed mood, life satisfaction, psychological distress, social network evaluation loneliness), considering differences. From an initial sample 1078 adolescents, 672 (51.64% girls) aged between 12–19 ( M = 14.45; SD 1.62) participated. The results showed that relational (peers partner) had poorer than those only one context, this difference being greater for girls boys. In addition, some were obtained the each type victimization. Depressed loneliness significant positive predictors peer boys girls. Nevertheless, predicted boys, but girls, while satisfaction a predictive capacity These findings highlight existence should be considered design intervention programs effectiveness.

Abstract Black and Latinx youth experience earlier pubertal timing relative to their non-stigmatized peers. Research on determinants of this increased risk has largely focused aspects individuals (e.g., body mass index) or proximal environment socioeconomic status), the exclusion broader macro-social factors. Background Exposure to adversity early in life (ELA) has been associated with elevated risk for depression during adolescence, particularly females; the mechanisms underlying this association, however, are poorly understood. One potential mechanism linking ELA and sex differences depressive symptoms is sleep disturbances, which increase adolescence more common females. Here, we examined whether disturbances mediate association between increases mediation differs by sex. Methods 224 ( N = 132 females) youth were recruited at age 9–13 years assessed every 2 across three timepoints. At first timepoint, conducted extensive interviews about stressful events participants experienced; provided subjective severity ratings of objectively scored each event. Self‐reported all We linear mixed models estimate both initial levels changes symptoms, moderated analyses test and/or mediated (objective subjective) mediations differed Results While higher problems uniquely males females, they related differently For greater (both subjectively rated) was problems, turn from late adolescence. In contrast, males, exposure not either of, or in, problems. Conclusions These findings highlight role transition mediating effects on symptoms.

Abstract Background Fear learning is a core component of conceptual models how adverse experiences may influence psychopathology. Specifically, existing theories posit that childhood involving trauma are associated with altered fear processes, while deprivation not. Several studies have found acquisition in youth exposed to trauma, but not deprivation, although the specific patterns varied across studies. The present study utilizes longitudinal sample children variability adversity examine associations among learning, and psychopathology youth. Methods includes 170 youths aged 10–13 years ( M = 11.56, s.d. 0.47, 48.24% female). Children completed conditioning task skin conductance responses (SCR) were obtained, which included both extinction. Childhood severity measured using parent report. Symptoms anxiety, externalizing problems, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) assessed at baseline again two-years later. Results Greater trauma-related greater SCR threat cue (CS+) relative safety (CS−) early acquisition, controlling for age, sex. Deprivation was unrelated learning. during increased PTSD symptoms over time mediated relationship between prospective changes symptoms. Conclusions youth, be one mechanism linking exposure violence emergence adolescence.

Abstract Background Undergoing puberty ahead of peers (‘earlier pubertal timing’) is an important risk factor for mental health problems during early adolescence. The current study examined pathways between timing and via connectivity neural systems implicated in emotional reactivity regulation (specifically corticolimbic connections) 9- to 14-year-olds. Method Research questions were the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study, a large population representative sample United States. Linear mixed models associations resting-state connectivity. Significant connections as potential mediators relationship (withdrawn depressed rule-breaking) problems. Exploratory analyses interrogated whether family environment moderated patterns those undergoing earlier than their peers. Results Earlier was related decreased limbic structures (bilateral amygdala right hippocampus) cingulo-opercular network, left somatomotor (mouth) well hippocampus ventral attention network visual network. Corticolimbic also mediated increased withdrawn (but not rule-breaking problems). Background The mechanisms linking early‐life adversity with psychopathology over the life‐course are complex. In this prospective study, we collectively examined cognitive, affective, and developmental mediators previously found to individually link childhood threat deprivation experiences adolescent identify most potent mechanisms. Methods Data came from a community sample of 227 children (mean child age 11.5 ± 0.5 years, 48.5% female) Seattle metro area recruitment designed reflect diversity in family income. Candidate included self‐rated pubertal development task‐measured attention bias threat, emotion regulation, theory mind, fear learning, inhibitory control, language ability, reasoning, reward sensitivity. Using high‐dimensional mediation approach, determined which mediating pathways persisted after controlling for all candidate associated psychopathology. Models additionally controlled child's age, sex, early‐childhood emotional behavioral symptoms, poverty, maternal depression. Results Blunted sensitivity mediated relationship between internalizing psychopathology, explaining 17.25% (95% CI 1.08%, 69.96%) association. Advanced was increases externalizing symptoms (standardized associations 0.16 0.03, 0.29) 0.17 0.05, 0.29), respectively), but not adversity. Although strongly related no were empirically identified. Conclusions well‐characterized sample, isolated as robust mediator association Interventions aimed at bolstering may mitigate impact on problems.
