Abstract: The intention-behavior gap (IBG) is a central challenge in health psychology, with significant implications for behavior change and promotion. Prevailing approaches to IBG assessment involve quantifying it as either the proportion of unexplained variance attributable intention or ratio unsuccessful intenders all intenders. While these concepts provide insight into variation at between-person level, major part intentions behaviors within-person level. This paper addresses limitations by introducing novel framework, which mathematically conceptualized multidimensional difference between an individual’s behavioral subsequent observed behavior. Key tenets this framework include: (1) Recognizing dynamic nature fundamental driver IBG, timing measurement playing crucial role predicting (2) Highlighting importance factors contextual intricacies influencing translation (3) Emphasizing need intensive longitudinal data frequent measurements within individuals capture relation daily life. also highlights study designs, theory, interventions psychology offers promising avenues reducing improving outcomes.

In the last half of twentieth century, psychology and neuroscience have experienced a renewed interest in intraindividual variation. To date, there are few quantitative methods to evaluate whether population (between-person) structure is likely hold for individual people, often referred as ergodicity. We introduce new network information theoretic metric, ergodicity index (EII), that quantifies amount lost by representing all individuals with between-person structure. A Monte Carlo simulation demonstrated EII can effectively delineate between ergodic nonergodic systems. bootstrap test derived statistically determine empirical data generated from an process. When process identified nonergodic, then it's possible mixture groups exist. exist, we develop clustering method detect groups. Finally, two examples presented using intensive longitudinal personality domains. Both datasets were found be meaningful groupings each dataset. Subsequent analysis showed some these ergodic, meaning represented single without significant loss information. Notably, data, could correctly identify clusters (young vs. older adults) measured pattern separation task related hippocampal connectivity default mode network.
