Plastics, once celebrated for their versatility, have now become a significant environmental threat due to persistence, with microplastics (MPs) posing serious concerns. This study examines the prevalence of MPs across various domains, focusing on impact ecosystems and human health, along analytical procedures treatment techniques. It has been found that Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) is most common procedure detection. Few policies/steps formulated by international organizations/governments impede proliferation MPs, which duly included herein. Germany, as Europe's largest economy major contributor plastic pollution, surprisingly dearth research in this area. So, focuses MP pollution German aquatic environment highlights alarming concentrations up 11,050 particles/L rivers 9,000 particles/m³ wastewater plants (WWTPs). Fibers dominate shape, polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS) are polymers, primarily originating from municipal/industrial wastewater. Based these findings identified gaps, paper provides recommendations future areas improvement, such standardized measurement units, more studies, combined effects other emerging contaminants.

ABSTRACT Nanoplastics, commonly used in cosmetics, enter wastewater systems and interact with activated sludge, yet their effects on microorganisms, essential for treatment, remain poorly understood. The aim of this study was to investigate the polyacrylic acid-based nanoplastics (PANPs) microorganisms sludge. PANPs were characterized terms material composition, size, zeta potential, additive content. Acute (30 min) prolonged (up 6 h) toxicity tests performed evaluate negative heterotrophic nitrifying In addition, ready inherent biodegradability assess degradation environment within treatment plants, respectively. results showed a significant acute inhibition activity 55 72%, respectively) at highest concentration tested (100 mg/L, 30 min), primarily attributed presence 1-dodecanol detected PANPs. This effect decreased exposure, likely due volatilization 1-dodecanol. Nevertheless, found be non-biodegradable both tests. Although do not appear pose long-term threat persistence raises concerns about possible accumulation.

Microplastics (MPs) and their associated chemical additives, such as bisphenol A (BPA), nonylphenol (NP), ethoxylate (NEPO), tetrabromobisphenol (TBBPA), are widely recognized significant environmental contaminants due to widespread presence in ecosystems potential impact on human health. This review evaluates advanced treatment technologies, membrane filtration oxidation processes, for mitigating these risks highlights gaps sustainability efficiency. Actionable strategies improving the removal of MPs MP additives were presented assessment innovative hybrid tailored different water matrices. The importance anti-fouling comprehensive life cycle assessments (LCAs), standardizing methods enhance applicability technologies further highlighted. To improve optimize processes ensure sustainability, existing knowledge must be addressed by framing a understanding long-term ecological effects additives.
