Natural pigments and colorants have seen a substantial increase in use over the last few decades due to their eco-friendly safe properties. Currently, customer preferences for more natural products are driving substitution of synthetic colorants. Filamentous fungi, particularly ascomycetous fungi (Monascus, Fusarium, Penicillium, Aspergillus), been shown produce secondary metabolites containing wide variety pigments, including β-carotene, melanins, azaphilones, quinones, flavins, ankaflavin, monascin, anthraquinone, naphthoquinone. These colors tints, yellow, orange, red, green, purple, brown, blue. Additionally, these broad spectrum pharmacological activities, immunomodulatory, anticancer, antioxidant, antibacterial, antiproliferative activities. Carotenoids are natural products regulated by the food sector, currently used as feed dyes and antioxidants in dietary supplements composing functional foods for human consumption. Of nearly one thousand carotenoids described to date, only retinoids, derived from beta carotene, have status of a drug pharmaceutical sector. In this review, we address novel field: transformation xanthophylls, particularly highly marketed astaxanthin practically unknown bacterioruberin, therapeutic agents altering their pharmacokinetics, biodistribution, pharmacodynamics through formulation nanomedicines. Microalgae are promising and sustainable sources of diverse valuable compounds, including chlorophyll, a pigment widely used in food, feed, cosmeceutical applications. Exploring its interesting green hue, recent investigations have delved into alternative industrial applications, such as textile dyeing, aiming to minimize reliance on non-sustainable synthetic dyes.
