The methane seeps on the Pacific margin of Costa Rica support extensive animal diversity and offer insights into deep-sea biogeography phylogeography. During five expeditions between 2009 2019, we conducted intensive faunal sampling via 63 submersible dives to 11 localities at depths 300-3600 m. Based these published literature, compiled voucher specimens, images, 267 newly DNA sequences present a taxonomic inventory macrofaunal megafaunal with focus invertebrates. We identified 487 morphospecies, which 132 are described species, least 57 undescribed remainder include some degree uncertainty, likely representing additional species. This total represents highest number distinct morphospecies from single seep or vent region date. Of 38 known only seeps. also report 13 range extensions for species Mexico, Galápagos seamounts, Chile, western Pacific; 17 new depth records; three records occur vents organic falls. note that no evolutionary narrative explains patterns biodiversity seeps, as even morphologically indistinguishable can show different phylogeographic affinities, biogeographic ranges, restrictions. emphasize value careful molecular taxonomy comprehensive specimen-based regional inventories research monitoring.

During five expeditions between 2009 2019, we conducted intensive faunal sampling via 63 submersible dives to 11 localities at depths 300–3600 m. Based these published literature, compiled voucher specimens, images, 274 newly DNA sequences present a taxonomic inventory macrofaunal megafaunal with focus invertebrates. In total 488 morphospecies were identified, representing highest number distinct from single seep or vent region date. Of these, 131 are described species, least 58 undescribed remainder include some degree uncertainty, likely additional species. 38 known only their vicinity. Fifteen range extensions also reported for species Mexico, Galápagos seamounts, Chile, western Pacific; as well 16 new depth records three occur vents organic falls. No evolutionary narrative explains patterns biodiversity seeps, even morphologically indistinguishable can show different biogeographic affinities, ranges, ranges. value careful molecular taxonomy comprehensive specimen-based regional inventories is emphasized research monitoring.

A marine nature reserve is an area designated by law for the special protection and management of sea areas, coasts, estuarine wetlands, islands, other areas needing protection, including objects exceptional conservation value. The purpose these reserves to protect natural environment resources sea. construction China’s protected can be traced back establishing Snake Island Nature Reserve in 1963. Over past six decades, China has established a network specially (including parks), which have played pivotal role safeguarding biodiversity, promoting integration land sea, defending country’s maritime rights interests. Nevertheless, challenge solve. It imperative further advance development enhancing spatial planning streamlining system, delineating interests associated with using areas.
