Abstract The degradation of biodegradable microplastics (MPs) can either stimulate or inhibit the decomposition soil organic carbon (SOC), but factors influencing these phenomena remain unclear. In this study, we used 13 C natural abundance to differentiate between dioxide (CO 2 ) arising from mineralization SOC and poly(lactic acid) (PLA) MP under varying water holding capacity (WHC) in alkaline acidic soils. We also quantified incorporation soil‐ PLA‐derived (C) into phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA)‐distinguishable microbial groups.
