Abstract The degradation of biodegradable microplastics (MPs) can either stimulate or inhibit the decomposition soil organic carbon (SOC), but factors influencing these phenomena remain unclear. In this study, we used 13 C natural abundance to differentiate between dioxide (CO 2 ) arising from mineralization SOC and poly(lactic acid) (PLA) MP under varying water holding capacity (WHC) in alkaline acidic soils. We also quantified incorporation soil‐ PLA‐derived (C) into phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA)‐distinguishable microbial groups. An increase moisture did not significantly affect PLA soil, increased degradability soil. particular, percentages incorporated PLFA‐distinguishable gram‐negative gram‐positive bacteria were 14%–63% 5%–33%, respectively, all treatments. presence induced positive priming effects 0 20 d treatments subsequently negative some conditions. total by greater with ≥70% WHC (37–43 mg kg −1 soil) than 50% (8.6 soil). effect was 72–78 ≤70% WHC, a observed 90% (−56 dissolved content positively correlated effect, relationship amount soil‐derived fungi. correlation found nitrate content. summary, our findings indicate that 0.4%–2.8% degraded soils after months, intensity direction are regulated pH, further exploration is needed elucidate mechanisms underlying effects.
