The biophysical modeling of water ecosystem services is crucial to understanding their availability, vulnerabilities, and fluxes. Among the most popular models, Integrated Valuation Ecosystem Services Trade-offs (InVEST) models stand out. While many studies have used them, few assessed performance. This study evaluates performance InVEST’s Seasonal Water Yield, Nutrient Delivery Ratio, Sediment Ratio in a subtropical basin southeastern Brazil on temporal spatial scales, using 39 years streamflow data, 29 for total phosphorus nitrogen, 19 suspended solids. Statistical indicators R2, PBIAS, NSE, were also calculated. varied according type simulated WES analysis scales used, with Yield model demonstrating best effectively representing variability average annual streamflow. All performed well simulating long-term mean values when compared observed data. one should bear mind study’s limitations, results indicate that perform terms relative magnitude, although application involving water-resource management decision making limited.

Payments for ecosystem services (PES) have been created worldwide to assist watershed management and improve or maintain water quality. Considering their importance, we conducted a holistic review of payment water-related understand how this instrument has applied in worldwide. First, identified the actions considered by PES programs challenges implementing PES. After methods criteria used define priority areas Our articles published on Web Science from 2011 2022. We found 236 relating resources, highlighting main conservation strategies: native vegetation conservation, restoration, best agricultural practices. The method most frequent was interview, followed use technologies, document analysis, hydrological models. Another significant result that receiving are mainly riparian zones, near with cover, higher erosion potential, steep areas, socially vulnerable communities. This crucial identify efficient resource strategies potential implementation development programs.

Estimating the on-site and off-site impacts of soil erosion as a function land use climate conditions in semi-arid basins is key for water conservation strategies. However, research gap exists theme, requiring further investigation using local hydrological data. To accomplish it, SDR-InVEST model was applied to Pardo-FB basin (Brazil) different use, conservation, conditions. The mean annual loss sediment yield varied between 7 36 Mg ha−1 yr−1 1.2 52.2 Gg yr−1, respectively. areas where tolerances were exceeded ranged from 20% 50% 0% 1%, respectively, depending on scenario. results indicate that anthropic high erosivities increase detachment decrease retention, generating higher sedimentation rates basin. restoration native vegetation practices reduced impacts, but their effectiveness wet contribute establishment strategies Pardo basin, well similar around world.

Abstract Global soil degradation due to road erosion is an escalating concern. This study employed bibliometric analysis using the Science Citation Index‐Expanded dataset gain insights into research trends in erosion. It covered years 2000–2021, revealing a steady increase annual publications, particularly after 2018. The United States and Catena was leading contributor most popular journal, respectively. primary areas identified by keywords statistical are forests arid regions temperate climate zone (including continental monsoon climate) tropical rainforest climate). Since 2012, noticeable shift from traditional methods emerging technologies like isotope tracing (e.g., 137 Cs, 210 Pb) machine learning random forest) observed, indicating evolving methodologies with changes scales. emphasized inevitability of erosion, highlighting crucial role effective management restoration. proposed integrating best practices ecosystem restoration strategies watershed management, combined advanced technological approaches, foster sustainable development.

Land degradation from water erosion poses a significant threat to security and ecosystem stability, driving global efforts in soil conservation. Quantitative assessment of conservation benefits-both on-site off-site-is crucial for guiding effective strategies. However, existing methodologies often fall short quantifying the value these combined benefits. Here, we present comprehensive framework service flows monetary terms, evaluating effectiveness both off-site measures. Applying this Yellow River Basin (YRB), employ cost-avoidance algorithms related fertility maintenance, dredging cost reduction, mitigation nonpoint source pollution. Our results reveal that while many areas contribute benefits, over half YRB relies predominantly on services. By strategically enhancing key regions-which constitute 30% basin-we demonstrate overall supply can increase by 64.2% multi-year average 2001 2020 compared consideration only. These findings underscore essential role services fully understanding needs, particularly large river basins, identified priority offer valuable insights optimizing efforts.
