Why aquatic scientists should use sulfur stable isotope ratios (ẟ34S) more often

Over
the
last
few
decades,
measurements
of
light
stable
isotope
ratios
have
been
increasingly
used
to
answer
questions
across
physiology,
biology,
ecology,
and
archaeology.
The
vast
majority
analyse
carbon
(δ13C)
nitrogen
(δ15N)
isotopes
as
'default'
isotopes,
omitting
sulfur
(δ34S)
due
time,
cost,
or
perceived
lack
benefits
instrumentation
capabilities.
Using
just
isotopic
can
produce
results
that
are
inconclusive,
uncertain,
in
worst
cases,
even
misleading,
especially
for
scientists
new
use
interpretation
data.
values
more
regularly
has
potential
mitigate
these
issues,
given
recent
advancements
lowered
measurement
barriers.
Here
we
provide
a
review
documenting
case
studies
with
real-world
data,
re-analysing
different
biological
topics
(i.e.
niche,
diet,
movement
bioarchaeology)
without
highlight
various
strengths
this
applications.
Each
study
demonstrates
how
exclusion
comes
at
detriment
results,
often
leading
very
outputs,
missing
valuable
discoveries
entirely.
We
also
include
preliminary
meta-analysis
trophic
discrimination
factor
(TDF)
which
suggest
small
(mean
−0.4
±
1.7
‰
SD)
but
taxa-dependent
mean
discrimination.
Given
relying
on
currently
underpin
most
our
understanding
ecological
processes,
concerning
implications.
Collectively,
examples
strongly
researchers
planning
their
research
should
incorporate
where
possible,
systems
now
be
carbon,
nitrogen,
sulfur.

Abstract
Portunid
crabs
are
an
iconic,
high
value
species
in
NSW,
but
catches
highly
variable
space
and
time.
Substantial
variation
biomass
is
observed
both
exploited
unfished
populations,
environmental
effects
on
distribution
abundance
important
factor
contributing
to
this
variability.
Predicting
responding
variability
a
challenge
for
management
sustainability
of
populations.
We
examine
spatial
temporal
Blue
Swimmer
Crab
(
Portunus
armatus
)
over
2.5
year
trapping
survey
two
temperate
estuaries
that
differ
tidal
flow
riverine
input.
Specifically,
monthly
catch
rates
throughout
the
estuary
examined
alongside
temperature
conductivity.
In
Wallis
Lake,
shallower
with
restricted
entrance,
water
conductivity
impacted
there
was
no
evidence
pulses
freshwater
had
major
impact.
For
10
°C
increase
population
average
shifted
~
700
m
closer
ocean.
Males
were
consistently
located
slightly
further
into
compared
females,
convincing
estuarine
egression
response
lower
salinity.
Port
Stephens,

estuary,

males
more
dispersed
than
within

Globally,
blue
carbon
ecosystems,
including
salt
marsh,
mangroves,
and
seagrasses,
the
associated
ecosystem
services
they
provide,
have
declined
substantially.
In
response,
restoration
has
recently
increased
but
scale
urgency
of
these
activities
been
limited
by
lack
economic
drivers.
Herein,
a
multidisciplinary
approach
is
presented
that
links
hydrologic
with
ecologic
outputs
to
highlight
potential
for
commercial
fisheries
could
arise
from
restoring
drained
floodplain.
Initially,
stable
isotope
models
are
used
predict
return
Eastern
school
prawn
(approximately
300
kg
yr
−1
ha
).
Hydrologic
then
applied
determine
area
marshes
mangroves
(over
2,000
ha)
be
potentially
restored
via
tidal
introduction.
Together,
results
indicate
ecological
in
this
region
contribute
an
annual
benefit
approximately
230
tons
additional
harvest,
which
valued
at
$3.1
±
1.3
million
AUD
fisheries.
This
would
represent
growth
nearly
50%
current
harvest
state.
Given
assessment
excludes
other
values
gained,
such
as
species
value,
sequestration,
biodiversity,
flood
control,
it
represents
conservative
financial
estimate.

projects,

business

projects

Saltmarsh
sediments
are
susceptible
to
accumulation
of
excessive
concentrations
anthropogenically
elevated
metals
such
as
lead
(Pb)
and
zinc
(Zn).
The
resident
salt
tolerant
plants
saltmarsh
ecosystems
form
the
basal
underpinning
these
ecosystems.
As
such,
metal-associated
adverse
impacts
on
their
physiology
can
have
detrimental
flow-on
effects
at
individual,
population,
community
levels.

partitioning
ecologically
relevant
Pb,
Zn,
combination
in
a
dominant
Australian
species,
Sarcocornia
quinqueflora.
Plants
were
hydroponically
maintained
under
glasshouse
conditions

weeks
exposure

Pb

Zn

or
mixture.

evaluated
chronic
toxicological

mixed
metal
treatments
with
reference
uptake
partitioning,
photosynthetic
performance,

concentration,
