Abstract Coastal populations are susceptible to relative sea-level (RSL) rise and accurate projections necessary for coastal adaptation. Local RSL may deviate from the global mean because of vertical land motion (VLM) but this is often inadequately estimated. Here, we estimated VLM Oka estuary, northern Spain compared it component in Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) Spanish National Adaptation Plan (NCCAP). To estimate VLM, updated late Holocene data Atlantic coast Europe with two 3D glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA) models. Both models fit well except estuary. We derived a rate -0.96 mm/yr estuary using residuals GIA misfits further validated nearby Global Navigation Satellite Systems, satellite altimetry tide gauge data. Incorporating IPCC AR6 under moderate emissions scenario increased by 14.4% 2030, 10.6% 2050, 9.9% 2150 original projections, also magnitude ~ 60% 2035 2090 NCCAP. Our study demonstrates potential capability constrain projections.

Coastal populations are susceptible to relative sea-level (RSL) rise and accurate local projections necessary for coastal adaptation. Local RSL may deviate from global mean because of processes such as geoid change, glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA), vertical land motion (VLM). Amongst all factors, the VLM is often inadequately estimated. Here, we estimated Oka estuary, northern Spain compared it component in Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) Spanish National Adaptation Plan (NCCAP). To estimate VLM, updated Holocene data Atlantic coast Europe with two 3D GIA models. Both models fit well except estuary. We derived a rate − 0.88 ± 0.03 mm/yr estuary using residuals misfits. Comparable rates 0.85 0.14 0.80 0.32 based nearby Global Navigation Satellite Systems station differenced altimetry-tide gauge technique, respectively. Incorporating late IPCC AR6 under moderate emissions scenario increased by 15% 2030, 11% 2050, 9% 2150 original projections, also magnitude over 40% 2035 2090 NCCAP. Our study demonstrates importance estimates projections.
