In classrooms, ethnic minority students are often confronted with several disadvantages – such as lower academic achievement, more negative teacher attitudes, and less recognition which all well examined in educational research. This study sought to understand if attitudes reflected gaze. Controlling for student behavior, do teachers look on majority than students? If have a visual preference their then we would expect that show higher number of fixations, longer duration shorter times first fixation compared students. To test this assumption, designed an explanatory sequential mixed-method sample 83 pre-service teachers. First, were invited watch video classroom situation while eye movements recorded. Second, after watching the video, they asked take written notes (a) how perceived attended (b) own experiences can relate situations video. Finally, standardized survey measured participants’ age, gender, background, explicit toward students, self-efficacy teaching stereotypes associated motivation Results indicated that, contrast our hypothesis, had durations addition, teachers’ correlated positively ( r = 0.26, p < 0.05) 0.31, suggesting positive also looked Furthermore, qualitative analyses disadvantaged language difficulties; referred when reflecting specific We discuss these findings considering significance education professional development implications further research dealing diversity.

Introduction Classroom teachers need to monitor a group of students varying in interest, knowledge, and behavior at the same time that they present lesson adapt it on fly student questions understanding. Many areas expertise are associated with special kinds perceptual skills, teaching presents its own challenges. We discuss nature expert looking must develop how relates more general models expertise. Standard methods classroom video limited their support teacher professional looking, we explore an alternative using mobile eyetracking overcomes many these limits. The combination records standard enables participant “re-experience” situation vivid way, while also seeing things missed first through. Methods report study which pairs novice experienced watched recordings performing retrospective think-aloud task. Results Experienced were better able describe high-level features significance lessons, novices likely talk about in-the-moment events such as failed see teaching. This is consistent work suggests there both costs benefits looking. Discussion Our results suggest ability quickly grasp meaning may be less awareness some lower-level those inferences based. Novice notice different have perspectives processes; understanding cognitive process will require combining insights from each. used this becoming costly accessible, unique role play research development.

Expert performance in a domain is often defined as maximal adaptation to stable task constraints. This definition useful when analyzing the vertical transition novices become experts. However, many workplaces undergo considerable changes and, thus, constraints change well. In this paper, complementary conceptualization of expertise offered, one that focuses on expert recurring dynamic horizontal experts adapt dynamically changing work contexts. Using documentary method, aim present study was analyze cases transitions based qualitative biographical interview data from five reconstructing different types technological their domains they have experienced. Implications for studying at worksites are discussed.
