Confronted with both internal environmental degradation and external economic transformation, the environment of old residential communities has become increasingly complex. Enhancing resident adaptability is crucial for to address multiple urban crises align community development evolution. Complex Adaptive System (CAS) theory provides an excellent analytical framework this study, emphasizing that agents contributes system complexity. The complex issues faced by essentially involve mismatches among adaptive capacities, pathways, objectives amid changing socioeconomic conditions. This study focuses on residents 15 in central area Xuzhou. Utilizing CAS theory, a structural equation model constructed explore mechanisms influencing adaptability. results indicate following: ① perceived built social have significant positive impacts ② Mediation analysis reveals plays mediating role relationship between objective adaptability, as well also serves mediator when affects ③ Among control variables examined, income, family structure, housing tenure significantly impact not only deepens theoretical understanding communities, providing more nuanced perspective residents’ behaviors environments, but offers specific strategic recommendations renewal enhancing thus holding practical value.

Urbanization is a rapidly accelerating global phenomenon that challenges sustainable development, requiring innovative frameworks for understanding and managing urban complexity. This study explores the application of Complexity Theory in framing cities as Complex Adaptive Systems (CAS), where dynamic social, economic, environmental, technological interactions generate emergent behaviors. A systematic literature review was conducted, analyzing 91 studies retrieved from Scopus explicitly link to sustainability. Key findings reveal trade-offs, such balancing economic growth with ecological preservation social equity, while emphasizing role self-organization adaptive governance enhancing resilience. Concrete examples include fractal analysis planning predict sprawl optimize infrastructure use system dynamics models align smart city initiatives United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Wider co-benefits identified improved public health through integrated green reinforcement cohesion via participatory planning. research concludes embracing enables holistic approach sustainability, fostering adaptable, resilient systems can better manage uncertainty. highlights need interdisciplinary collaboration policy navigate multifaceted modern urbanization.
