Soil conservation (SC), which supports ecosystems by retaining vegetation, controlling erosion, sediment, cycling nutrients, water, maintaining diversity, and forming soil, is threatened human-induced soil erosion landscape fragmentation. Therefore, revealing the spatial relationship between fragmentation (LF) SC can provide a scientific basis for ecosystem policy-making planning in China. However, previous studies failed to reveal spatially non-stationary response of LF, especially at national scale. To compensate research gaps, this study first measured county scale with benefit transfer method, then LF was characterized pattern indices, finally relationships from global local perspectives through regression models were analyzed. Results showed that values services per unit area 2000, 2010, 2018 $134.73/ha, $132.30/ha, $130.71/ha, respectively, showing continuous decreasing trend. The high-value areas distributed south Qinling-Huaihe River, Greater Khingan Mountains, Changbai Mountain areas. In contrast, low-value mainly northwest low northwestern region, while Shanxi, Shaanxi, Hebei, southern Gansu presented highly fragmented landscapes. results higher regional value SC. Meanwhile, there significant heterogeneity closely related population distribution resource endowment. future, planning, land use structure layout take impact mechanism on as essential basis.

Understanding the complex interactions between urbanization and ecosystem services (ESs) is crucial for optimizing planning policies achieving sustainable urban management. While previous research has largely focused on highly urbanized areas, little attention been given to phased effect of progressive ES networks. This study proposes a conceptual framework that utilizes network method space-time replacement examine relationships among ESs at different stages, with particular emphasis evolution process. We apply this Horqin area, typical eco-fragile area in China. Results demonstrate connectivity synergy exhibits non-stationary characteristic, initially increasing, then decreasing, subsequently strengthening, while its modularity shows rising trend during periods accelerated urbanization. The performance trade-off displays opposite pattern. Additionally, we observe gradual provisioning regulation by cultural terms dominance as advances. By providing guidance identifying key initiatives implementing ecological protection stages development, contributes pathway can inform development strategies other regions undergoing

Abstract Background Ecological land evolution is essential in shaping regional landscape patterns, influencing ecosystem processes, and altering functions. However, existing indices inadequately quantify both ecological degradation restoration particularly regarding patch-scale dynamics related to connectivity fragmentation. This study aimed propose the Land Evolution Index (ELEI), a novel metric designed comprehensively assess spatiotemporal intricacies of at patch level. By integrating spatial proximity connectivity, ELEI offers more refined holistic evaluation compared traditional indices, thereby enhancing our comprehension these dynamic processes. Results Utilizing four temporal snapshots (1990, 2000, 2010, 2020) use raster data from urban agglomeration middle reaches Yangtze River (UAMRYR) China, we applied patterns restoration(ELR) degradation(ELD). The results demonstrate significant heterogeneity evolution. Cities such as YCH, HY, JJ showed large-scale restoration, primarily driven by expansion connecting infilling patches. In contrast, highly urbanized areas like WH CS exhibited severe fragmentation, form fragmented enclosed also revealed shifts ELR ELD distributions, with fragmentation intensifying 2000 followed signs reversal subsequent decade due initiatives. Compared other provides in-depth comprehensive understanding rapidly urbanizing areas, identifying regions where efforts have succeeded continues. Conclusions studying demonstrated ELEI’s effectiveness key degradation, offering crucial insights for policymakers striving balance economic development conservation. Additionally, variants (Mean (MELEI) Area-Weighted Mean (AWMELEI)) highlights their value tracking over time, providing valuable tool conservation planning management.

ABSTRACT Ecological barrier areas are the natural area with special ecological functions, and play a vital role in maintaining global balance, protecting biodiversity, regulating climate. They also profoundly affect local social system inhabitants' lifestyle. Mitigating trade‐offs between distinct ecosystem services enhancing social–ecological coupling essential for sustainable development of areas. However, lack integrating them on topographical gradient features compromises our ability to design precise interventions regional sustainability. Taking Sichuan‐Yunnan Barrier as case area, this study developed management approach by service interactions under multidimensional gradients provide reference assessing improving sustainability area. The results demonstrated that during 2010–2020, topography played key shaping interactions, hilly showing highest synergistic level multiple pairs. high relief mountain had lowest index system; decreased rapidly flatter areas, while it increased low middle Based above multi‐dimensional characteristics, six zones were subdivided formulating differentiated strategies This research provides insights regarding territorial spatial strategies, delivers guidance coordinating relationships systems other similar
