The disruption associated with heat decarbonisation has been identified as a key opportunity for hydrogen technologies in temperate countries and regions, where established distribution infrastructure familiarity natural gas boilers predominate. A element of such claims is the empirically untested belief that citizens will prefer to minimise perceive be less disruptive than network upgrades retrofit measures needed support electric other low carbon heating technologies. This article reports on exploratory deliberative research residents Cardiff, Wales which examined public perceptions disruptions. Our findings suggest concerns over responses may overstated, particularly they relate construction road excavation upgrade. Disruptions arising from permanent changes building fabric more problematic pump retrofit, however these greatly overshadowed by anxieties cost implications moving fuel. Furthermore, biographical patterning citizen preferences raises significant questions roll-out strategies relying regionalised conversion. We conclude arguing far non-disruptive alternative electrification, risks being seen posing substantial disruptions precarious household finances lifestyles.

In the context of achieving net zero climate targets, heating poses a significant decarbonization challenge, with buildings contributing substantially to global energy consumption and carbon emissions. While enhancing efficiency in building fabric can reduce emissions, complete elimination is not feasible while relying on fossil-fuel-based systems. Hydrogen has been suggested for decarbonizing recent years as potential solution replacing fossil-fuel heating. This paper carries out meta-review 54 independent studies assess scientific evidence using hydrogen buildings. The analysis concludes that does support major role cost-optimal pathways being associated higher system consumer costs. Electrification district are deemed preferable due lower costs majority analyzed studies.

Discourse analysis is gaining attention in transition studies. This paper uses discourse network (DNA) to study how coalitions, and the storylines they mobilize, change over time.Drawing from archival data of two daily newspapers, we analyze struggle coal phase-out Germany .We identify an anti-coal coalition, which was stable ideationally congruent time.It used climate as dominant storyline delegitimize coal. The policy decision 2020 can be interpreted success this coalition. The pro-coal contrast, more dispersed less consistent their arguments.Nonetheless, it able institutionalize some its key final policies. We argue that DNA a powerful tool mobilize sustainability transitions research for politics beyond.

Secure housing is core to the Sustainable Development Goals and a fundamental human right. However, potential conflicts between sustainability objectives remain under-researched. We explore impact of current English government policy, alternative strategies, on national carbon biodiversity goals. Using material flow land use change/biodiversity models, we estimate from 2022 2050 under policy alone would consume 104% England's cumulative budget (2.6/2.5Gt [50% chance < 1.5 °C]); 12% construction operation newbuilds 92% existing stock.
