Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) crops in the inland Pacific Northwest demand nitrogen (N) fertilizers at high levels to achieve yield and grain protein objectives. Inefficiencies N use can accelerate soil acidification, contribute N2O emissions, result unnecessary input costs. Reducing losses is a complicated problem, as producers have consider targets, co-limitations of water other nutrients, longer term health goals, variability crop performance across fields. However, past work region has established that there are least four prevalent syndromes, each which different environmental effects lend themselves actions for adapting management. Mitigation practices for cereal systems, including conservation agriculture and low emission fertilization, are required to face global challenges of food security climate change. The combination these climate-smart approaches was investigated durum wheat in a dry region the Mediterranean basin two crop seasons. experimental design consisted different genotypes, Marco Aurelio (high protein content) Saragolla (higher adaptability), subjected no tillage (NT) vs. conventional (CT) fertilization strategies (standard plus an unfertilized control). Different environmental economic sustainability parameters as well technological nutritional quality traits were evaluated. showed better adaptability higher nitrogen use efficiency, evaluated partial nutrient balance (+27%), associated with lower content (14.5% 15.6%). NT improvement yield (+15%) quality, i.e., micronutrients (Fe, Zn) antioxidant capacity (+15%), drier year. Low did not reduce performance its net return. mitigation improved only but also health under water limited conditions.
