Exploration of Body Image in Postoperative Patients With Oral Cancer: An Exploratory Sequential Mixed Methods Study

ABSTRACT
Background
Postoperative
patients
with
oral
cancer
are
deeply
distressed
about
their
body
image.
However,
true
inner
feelings
and
the
factors
influencing
image
remain
unclear.
Aims
This
study
aims
to
investigate
experience
of
disturbance
in
3
months
after
surgery
analyze
factors.
Methods
process
was
divided
into
three
steps:
(1)
semi‐structured
interviews,
based
on
Society
Ecosystems
Theory,
disorders
surgery,
followed
by
theme
summaries;
(2)
appropriate
selection
scales
according
qualitative
results;
(3)
a
cross‐sectional
survey
explore
pathways
affecting
patients.
Results
Qualitative
research
summarized
nine
themes
from
individual,
family/employment,
societal/institutional
levels,
individual
level
being
most
commonly
mentioned.
Further
investigation
revealed
that
self‐esteem
social
alienation
have
chain
mediating
effect
relationship
between
speech
handicap
Conclusions
The
postoperative
is
influenced
personal,
family,
societal
aspects.
These
results
lay
groundwork
for
formulating
interventions
alleviate
concerns.

Cognitive
behavioral
therapy
(CBT)
has
proven
effective
in
addressing
the
psychological
and
emotional
challenges
of
cancer.
This
study
evaluated
impact
a
self-esteem
enhancement
intervention
integrated
into
standard
CBT
protocol
on
quality
life
women
with
colorectal

(Romania)

August
2020
March
2024,
included
67
aged
32
to
66
years
undergoing
chemotherapy
or
combined
radiotherapy.

assigned

eight
weekly
sessions

Program,
control
group
psychotherapy
waiting
list.
Quality
was
assessed
using
EORTC
QLQ-C30
questionnaire,
measured
through
actual
ideal
self-perceptions.

repeated
measures
ANOVA
analyzed
changes
both
outcomes.
Results
showed
significant
improvement
(F
=
6.33,
df
1,
65,

0.05)
4.46,
whereas
no
improvements
observed
group.
Self-esteem
enhanced
reduced
discrepancies
self-perceptions,
especially
cognitive
dimensions.
Physical
functioning
improved
but
less
pronounced,
influenced
by
disease
progression
treatment
stage.
No
social
functioning,
suggesting
that
longer-term
interventions
may
be
needed.
These
findings
highlight
as
valuable
complementary
oncology
care,
supporting
its
integration
enhance
patients’
well-being
life.
