The energy consumption of cities is increasing fast due to growing global population and rapid urbanization. Urban Building Energy Models (UBEMs) are promising tools simulate the demand buildings under different urban scenarios. Nowadays, major barriers effective use UBEMs uncertainty related their input parameters lack good-quality, open data. latter make deterministic UBEM simulations unreliable, calibration approaches unsuitable for most in world. present work proposes combine physics-based with Uncertainty Sensitivity Analysis on main using aggregated data from regional/national statistics. proposed procedure selects influential characterizes through Forward obtain stochastic load profiles space heating cooling. method was first tested against hourly thermal power metered a heterogeneous sample Verona (Italy). average profile obtained significantly improved compared deterministic, archetype-based terms needs peak loads. overestimation residential reduced 80% 25%, deviation calculation drops 18% 10%. simulation then applied district Milan (Italy), including more than 600 buildings, resulting similar variations. Overall, results demonstrate that considering operational, geometrical physical utmost importance reliable simulations.

Climate change, increasing emissions and rising global temperatures have gradually affected the way we think about future of our planet. Urban areas possess significant potential for reducing energy consumption overall system. In recent years, there is an number research initiatives related to Building Energy Modelling (UBEM) that focus on simulation processes validation techniques. Although input data are crucial modelling process as well validity results, availability associated formats were not analysed in detail. This paper closes identified knowledge gap by presenting a taxonomic analysis key UBEM components including: formats, tools, results concludes over ∼95% studies reproducible due absence information relating aspects respective methodologies such sources workflows. also qualifies how weak levels interoperability, with respect output data, present all phases UBEM.

Due to rapid urbanisation and the significant contribution of cities worldwide energy use greenhouse gas emissions, urban system planning is growing more important. Urban building modelling (UBEM) draws increasing attention in field due its inherent capacities for entire or stocks, potential varying data inputs, approaches applications. This review aims identify best practices improvements UBEM applications by examining previous research, with a focus on currently least established approaches. Different archetype development procedures are analysed common problems, six main under-developed input parameters identified, future scenario surveyed. By analysing studies related fields, this paper provides an overview gaps published research possible additions projects that can help expanding existing procedures. Comprehensive human behaviour models additional aspects beyond occupant presence identified as major point interest. Further socio-economic parameters, such household income demographics, also suggested further improve modelling. study underlines utilising tool evaluating climate change scenarios.

The transitional pathway to carbon neutrality in commercial building stock requires improvement of energy efficiency, use renewable sources and implementation non-technological mitigation strategies. However, several methods have been developed assess the but they mainly lack ability spatiotemporal quantification demand decarbonization potential which hinders evaluation at multiple scales. This paper presents a GIS-synthetic hybrid urban model (UBEM) coupled with physical-based approach integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) estimation incorporate building-level large scale that could further evaluate feasibility multi-scale level. As case study, proposed scheme is applied Tokyo cofound influence active passive design measures, BIPV on overall potential. results indicate following findings: annual CO2 emissions can be reduced by 84% simultaneous all measures; focusing measures not enough achieve buildings only contribute 10% reduction potential; 16% 40% contributed less than efficiency scale-bounded comparative analysis shows total changes order magnitude 29 54 variation (with reference district scale) 4–16% more self-sufficiency observed building-by-building level comparison city demonstrates this provide purpose-driven perspective for transition scales computational time. Overall, provides multi-level modelers policymakers how stock.

As the world continues to urbanize at an unprecedented rate, energy demand in cities is rising. Buildings account for over 75% of all consumed and are responsible two-thirds emissions. Assessment buildings a highly integrative endeavour, bringing together interdisciplinary fields urban studies, along with host technical domains namely, geography, engineering, economics, sociology, planning. In last decade, several building modelling tools (UBEMs) have been developed estimation as well prediction cities. These models useful policymaking they can evaluate future scenarios. However, data acquisition generating input database UBEM has major challenge. this review, comprehensive assessment potential remote sensing GIS techniques presented. Firstly, most common variables identified by reviewing recent publications on then studies related corresponding these explored. More than 140 research papers review articles relevant applications level extraction areas investigated purpose. After going through details required each components studying possibility acquiring some those using sensing, it inferred that satellite Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) strong enhancing space but their applicability limited. Further, challenges usage technologies possible solutions also presented study. It recommended utilise existing methodologies extracting information from UBEM, newer such machine learning artificial intelligence.
