Abstract We implemented a crossover study design exposing 15 participants to two indoor air quality conditions in the Well Living Lab. The first condition, Standard Control Condition, resembled ventilation and supply of typical home USA with manually operated stove hood. second Advanced Control, had an automated: (i) hood, (ii) portable cleaners (PAC), (iii) bathroom exhaust. PM 2.5 sensors were placed kitchen, living room, bedroom, bathroom. Once sensor detected level µg/m 3 or higher, intervention (stove PAC exhaust) that space was activated turned off when corresponding three consecutive readings below 6 . overall apartment reduced PM2.5 concentration by 40% compared Control. In difference between ~ 20%. This can be attributed using hood 66.5% cooking emission events for 323.6 h 88 used automated mode alongside 61.9 33.7 use room respectively.

The global increase in population coupled with poor access to clean energy has set pressure on solid fuel use. Through this, about one-third of the world's currently relies fuels (fuelwood, charcoal, coal, agro-residues, dung, etc.) meeting their primary needs. However, only 11% this used improved biomass cookstoves (cookstoves potential reductions use and toxic emissions). This is more peculiar developing countries where cooking accounts for 90% domestic consumption. With research technology increased recent years as 1905 articles have been reportedly published less than a decade (2014 - 2022). paper aims at bringing together literature spanning over focus technical aspects establish advances current state knowledge. Cooking and cleaning are among the largest sources of home pollutant emissions. To reduce these emissions, we developed an automated indoor air quality (IAQ) control intervention that operated based on real-time sensor readings particulate matter (PM2.5) evaluated perceptual differences between this a baseline condition. We employed 14-participant crossover study design in one-bedroom apartment module. Participants experienced one two conditions: (1) Advanced Control–automated IAQ interventions including stove hood, portable cleaners, bathroom exhaust powered on/off predefined PM2.5 thresholds measured by environmental sensors; (2) Standard Control–participants controlling (e.g., hood) manually. Each condition lasted weeks. followed standardized cooking protocols filled out surveys assessing psychosocial outcomes. Observations indicated weekly satisfaction, perception, preferences were similar conditions—despite lower concentrations during for Control versus Condition. When pairing complaints with cooking, observed participants made when >∼80 μg/m3 but few <∼60 μg/m3. Lower Condition cleaning, did not appear perceivable due to far overall. Our observations suggest connection concentration participants, thereby providing possible changes.

In residential buildings that are private, autonomous, and occupied spaces for most of the time, it is necessary to maintain good indoor air quality (IAQ), especially when there children, elderly, or other vulnerable users. Within development sensors, their low-cost features with adequate accuracy reliability, as well Internet Things applications, make them affordable, flexible, feasible even ordinary occupants guarantee IAQ monitoring in homes. This systematic review searched papers based on Scopus Web Science databases about Low-Cost Sensors (LCS) IoT applications research, 23 studies were included targeted research contents. The highlights several aspects active strategies buildings, including following: (1) Applying existing appropriate sensors target pollutants; (2) micro-controller unit selection; (3) devices’ costs applications; (4) Data collection storage methods; (5) LCS calibration methods applications. addition, also discussed some possible solutions limitations from works past device experiences.

Severely cold weather reduces the willingness of residents to open windows while cooking. This results in an insufficient replenishment makeup air and a reduction range hood discharge capacity. For effective trade-off between indoor temperature maintenance quality aggravation winter, new supply method (ceiling air) was proposed established both experimentally numerically. The improvements kitchen environment during cooking were studied through experimental tests CFD simulations, considering different arrangements. reveal that ceiling scheme can significantly reduce concentration PM2.5 compared with cracks (wherein window door are closed). Moreover, it increased by over 11.9 °C scheme. average relative error simulated data within 6.1%. Among considered factors, size inlet had largest impact. followed layout, size, shape inlets. demonstrated potential for improving residential environments severely regions.

The clean cooking challenge in India is deeply intertwined with socioeconomic, cultural, and infrastructural barriers. Despite government initiatives, a significant portion of the population still depends on solid biomass for cooking, leading to severe health, environmental, social consequences. Energy poverty limits access affordable fuels, especially low-income households, creating complex scenario where economic growth alone does not drive shift toward cleaner options. Our study identifies three primary research themes cooking: accessibility rural areas, advancements cookstove technology, health impacts indoor air pollution, particularly vulnerable groups. This aligns closely SDG 7 (Affordable & Clean Energy) contributes SDGs 3 (Health) 13 (Climate Action), highlighting broader benefits transitioning energy sources. However, gaps remain addressing 4 (Education), 16 (Institutions), 17 (Partnerships), pointing need greater policy integration collaborative efforts. case studies further illustrate challenges disruptions caused by COVID-19, including setbacks fuel programs increased emphasizing urgency supportive policies. India's policies have implications only its socioeconomic environmental but also setting regional benchmark sustainable energy, positioning country as potential leader initiatives across Asia. beyond domestic benefits, potentially serving model practices Asia bolstering global progress targets.
