Digital Twins are virtual replicas of real-world entities that have the potential to improve their sustainability, reliability, and efficiency. Therefore, in recent years, there has been a significant increase number research articles covering different applications approaches energy systems buildings. However, what is Twin how it from other models or simulations not clearly defined. To bridge this gap, presented review presents utilises four distinct methods categorise determine maturity level works field. Through study, was possible notice how, depending on method chosen classify works, between 12.5% 36% reviewed papers can be considered Twins. Consequently, selection detailed, highlighting key characteristics contributions management within built environment. Most refer smart grids buildings-digital twins followed by related power generation systems. Despite revealed progress, additional effort still required fully exploit as needed European Union International Energy Agency.
