Abstract In the literature, there is a lack of tools able to optimize contextually design and operation multi-energy system in its entirety, encompassing both (i) number, type, size energy conversion storage plants supplying end users with required (ii) geometry capacity distribution networks delivering that users. Moreover, rarely retrofit problem considered, where “retrofit design” refers addition new components initially available existing systems. Here, general method proposed simultaneously associated networks. The goal consists finding additional be added already components—energy plants, networks—and installed order comply given reduction targets carbon emissions while keeping life cycle cost at minimum. A district composed commercial residential buildings operating microgrid considered as case study. Heat can provided via heating network, electricity either generated on-site or imported from national power grid. Results show contextual 35% CO2 emission 20% respect original configuration.

This study presents innovative methodologies addressing critical challenges in energy community real-cases implementation. The investigation is conducted by exploring and enhancing the concept of Peer-to-Peer community, where prosumers interact with consumers sharing surplus to meet their electricity demands. end-users' connections are optimised maximizing interactions proposed pricing strategies based on balancing supply demand curves for tailored unit costs. aims optimise design communities' configurations applicability real case scenarios suggesting novel aggregation criteria. These criteria focused select type number users an maximize economic benefit amount self-consumed renewable energy. A bi-level optimisation approach at basis these first level maximizes self-sufficiency benefits aggregating into subgroups. second determines optimal configuration, prioritizing total self-consumption. methodology requires knowledge users' electrical needs, therefore, address problem related insufficient data, a Hybrid Neural Network model simulate building residential area Caserta, Italy, demonstrates methodology's effectiveness. By identifying user types, predicting demands, employing techniques, estimates (1.6% 19.5% savings) (return investment <3 years) compared reference scenario connected only national grid. Moreover, strategy achieves 89% annual self-consumption 64% scenario, significantly reducing network imbalances caused prosumer surpluses.

This study follows a multi-disciplinary approach to implementing an Energy Community (ECs) in Vega de Valcarce, rural town Spain. ECs are entities that encompass collective actions of citizens and other actors towards the open, democratic governance renewable energy sources; can take various technical organisational forms. developed evaluated socially accepted, technically optimal feasible options for implementation EC at Valcarce. We conducted participatory multi-criteria analysis incorporating results mixed-integer linear programming system optimisation regulatory under Spanish law. Our showed main objectives local stakeholders reduction bill emissions. The limited liability company fulfilled best legal restrictions by bigger-sized EC. summarise key challenges context, mainly financial, conclude with recommendations overcome these. While contributing understanding roll-out Spain Europe, our research aims provide structured procedure uptake areas.

Abstract Demand-side management (DSM) schemes play a crucial role in managing renewable energy generation and load fluctuations by utilizing demand–response programmes (DRPs). This paper aims to provide detailed overview of DRPs that help microgrid operators keep costs reliability within acceptable ranges. Additionally, this review provides economic model for based on initial load, (DR) incentive, DR penalty elasticity coefficients. article also guide researchers identifying research gaps DSM applications microgrids comparing various from different countries regions terms strategies, objective functions optimization techniques. Furthermore, study analyses the impact configuration perspective utilities customers, considering technical performance metrics. As result, it can be concluded none studied cases models or guidelines choosing appropriate consider consumer interests load-type features. few have addressed features modern price-based strategy, generation-based dynamic pricing DR, which offers higher customer satisfaction than traditional DRPs.

The Renewable Energy Community (REC) in Europe promotes renewable energy sources (RESs), offering social, economic, and environmental benefits. This new entity could alter consumer relationships, requiring self-consumption, sharing, full utilization of RESs. Modernizing systems within the REC requires addressing demand response, management system initiatives. paper discusses role decentralized systems, scenarios concept key aspects, activities involving generation, consumption, storage EV technologies. Moreover, present work highlights research gap existing literature necessity technological elements. It also that there is no uniform architecture or model for REC, like case microgrids. Additionally, emphasizes importance elements RECs, suggesting future recommendations EMS, DSM, data monitoring analytics, communication software tools to ensure reliability, efficiency, measures. authors highlight crucial policymakers relevant policies, which help implementing these show RECs a sustainable shift transition.

Renewable energy communities are catalysts of social innovation, the citizens’ engagement in actions, and exploitation local resources. Thus, this paper defines a model for analyzing optimally sizing systems serving renewable communities. Then, proposed replicable was tailored to economic feasibility analysis community municipality Tirano (Northern Italy). An audit carried out identify electricity production consumption within perimeter primary substation thermal demand existing district heating network. The technical features conversion were determined: an organic Rankine cycle biomass-based cogeneration plant, mini-hydro distributed photovoltaic system. Moreover, several different scenarios have been identified, terms operating mode, penetration, value. results show that, moving from 4.22 MW 5.22 peak power, annual increases by 10.1%. In particular, simple pay back ranges between 4.90 4.98 years net present value EUR 12.4 13.3 M CHP at full power considering that available unit is sold 49.2/MWh. These outcomes demonstrate wood-biomass-based communities, which may help enlarge contribution technologies other than photovoltaic.
