The scope of energy system modelling is to support policy-makers in the definition an effective strategy achieve key targets (emissions, security, affordability, etc.). aim this article study future optimal mix needed reach European by also containing risk supply for seven countries 2030 and 2050. considered are following: Spain, Italy, France, Germany, Netherlands, Poland, Sweden. EPLANopt which couples deterministic simulation model EnergyPLAN developed Aalborg University with a Multi-Objective Evolutionary Algorithm built on Python library DEAP used analysis. multi-objective approach allows assessment scenarios considering both economic environmental objective functions. Moreover, security evaluated each solution. results obtained terms variable renewable penetration, taking into account ground-mounted, rooftop photovoltaics, onshore offshore wind power, compared penetrations from ENTSO-E. show that decarbonization process represents opportunity because it improves while decreasing CO2 emissions.

District energy (DE) plants are transitioning away from being providers of heat and electricity through the cogeneration power (CHP) to consuming for pumps (HPs) electric boilers. Concurrently, hydrogen production electrofuels may be combined with DEs exploit thermal losses electrolysers electrofuel synthesis. Where CHP units favour high prices boilers or HPs low – thus providing incentive operation at both - future call prices, increasing need storage. Costly storage could also enable flexible operation. In this article, energyPRO is applied investigate optimal system compositions a focus on capacities. Results show that added flexibility in shape more valuable. Storage costs than compensated by improved performance market. Added electrolyser capacity HP improve flexibility, but only pays off business-economic terms. All modelled ways perform better market give value overall system.

The value of energy system scenarios is increasingly asserted in a decentralised and municipal context. There is, however, lack suitable tools for designing such scenarios, particularly that empower local planning practitioners active participation. With this study, we introduce novel tool designed specifically modelling, thus bridging the gap between model developers practitioners. applicability suitability new MUSEPLAN investigated through its application case municipality, revolving around needs practitioners, supporting build-up modelling capacity, focusing on practical development scenarios. draws specialist simulation EnergyPLAN but provides an environment integrated design comparison multiple while reducing complexity some advanced options. In conclusion, resolves identified challenges to integration planning, simplifying scenario evaluation process.

So far, energy planning methods faced several challenges in achieving a proper assessment due to the extreme variability of input conditions. To considerably decrease computational efforts solutions, most analyses reported scientific literature assume constant costs and demand over entire horizon typical year. However, results might not be perfectly aligned with real ones because incapability some models address aspects like demand/production variability, technology costs, efficiency degradation, use different carriers. This paper proposes novel methodology that optimises both long-term short-term scheduling decisions management multi-energy carries community by means Mixed Integer Linear Programming model also considers modular design technologies (e.g., technological devices selection from discrete set variants). Such has been applied case study University campus Italy, whose historical data were used for its time 30 years. Three scenarios have analysed: (i) Business As Usual, (ii) Sector-coupling scenario, and, finally, (iii) Hydrogen deployment one. The are obtained under scenarios, showing effectiveness dealing multi-investment stages at levels reasonable time. In particular, they showed deploying more sustainable would increase cost electricity (between 43%–89%), while reducing other carriers' (about 60%) lowering all carbon footprint 50%–80%). From perspective, sector-coupling is beneficial economic environmental points view, ii) dynamic variations parameters can strongly affect high-cost installed beyond 2030.

Energy transition studies, focusing on electricity and heating sectors, often consider a local energy system perspective. According to current state-of-the-art, systems perspective is yet typically dismissed in the existing road transport decarbonization studies. Such studies tend be limited national or global perspective, ignoring challenges that rural areas may face. This study aims develop context-specific method considers when generating pathways. Literature review findings were iterated through participatory interactions with municipal officials from three Swedish municipalities, representing different-sized areas. Based municipalities' climate actions (fossil-free municipality targets) availability of resources, five pathways identified an iterative co-development manner. These differed respect to: (i) production; (ii) use bio-sources; (iii) flexibility public services; (iv) tourism-related traffic demands. The subjected qualitative performance assessment, which revealed feasibility each pathway depends economic, environmental, logistical factors. Although all have potential contribute systems, municipalities preferred different depending their socio-economic, technical, regulatory priorities.
