Abstract As fractures serve as the primary heat exchange channels between medium and rock, accurately describing random geometric characteristics of is crucial for studying extraction performance Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS). In this study, based on a Voronoi-discrete fracture network, two-dimensional coupled THM (Thermal-Hydraulic-Mechanical) numerical model was developed to explore effects development degree, circulating media, injection/production parameters system’s performance. The results indicate that: ① degree in reservoir increases extends exploitation lifetime. ② has greatest impact system. After 30 years production, N 2 O CO have similar thermal conductivity viscosity, with production temperature approximately 557.51 K, while H only 484.01 K. ③ injection rate secondary Excessively high rates cause short-circuiting wells, significantly reducing temperature. ④. pressure little effect performance, but increasing can reduce pressure. contrast, internal driving force. conclusion suggests that well-developed network enhances Choosing an 60–80 kg s −1 appropriately satisfy both requirements long-term goals.

The reserves of hot dry rock (HDR) geothermal resources are huge. main method used to develop HDR is called an enhanced system (EGS), and this generally uses hydraulic fracturing. After nearly 50 years research development, more countries have joined the ranks engaged in exploration development world. This paper summarizes base technologies, key game-changing technologies promote commercialization resources. According present situation exploration, utilization at home abroad, evaluation site selection, efficient low-cost drilling, defined as technologies. Key include high-resolution characterization HDR, complex fracture network reservoir creation, effective microseismic control, connectivity, characterization. Game-changing downhole liquid explosion in-situ heat transfer power generation, use CO2 other working fluids for high-efficient generation. Deep borehole heat exchangers (DBHEs) have been widely used for extracting geothermal energy in China. However, the application of this technology an open well with high temperature remains unknown. In paper, thermal performance a DBHE installed groundwater-filled hot dry rock (HDR) Gonghe Basin Qinghai Province China was investigated. A U-shaped pipe subjected to hydraulic pressure 30 MPa and 180 °C tested successfully. Severe loss detected during test, which might due not being well-insulated. To better understand DBHEs, numerical model developed. The results indicate that pipe’s increased by 247% using insulation 15 mm layer thickness conductivity 0.042 W/m·K. Thermal significantly improved increasing fluid flow rate diameter. Among different configurations, double buried pipes can achieve highest performance. heat-specific reach up 341.33 W/m diameter 63 mm. second be achieved coaxial pipe, while single lowest one.

At the 28th Conference of Parties (COP28) a commitment to triple renewable energy capacity by 2030 was made. Currently at 16 GW, geothermal accounts for 0.5% world-wide installed electricity capacity. In this scoping review, Elsevier’s database used determine role reservoir simulation has played and could continue play in assisting industry achieving COP28's goal. The review includes journal papers published English from 2020 2023. Particular attention paid applications TOUGH2 COMSOL, benefits Machine Learning (ML) recent projects that assist promoting industry. topics' categories comprised: Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS), hydrothermal, laboratory, technology synergies. Outcomes bibliometric analysis elucidate these trends: ML is vital ensuring optimisation resources; EGS cross-industry are showing growing global interest. likelihood meeting COP28 target would be enhanced with increased participation South American African countries. However, industry’s growth continents restricted high initial investment costs, technical complexities, unclear regulatory frameworks, social acceptance, difficulties electrical grid integration. Suggestions overcoming barriers development proposed. A brief country case study also presented. It focuses on economic, environmental context understand unique challenges opportunities geothermal. Finally, five areas research were identified: Thermo-Hydro-Mechanical-Chemical processes, reinjection induced seismicity, characterization, collaborations, laboratory studies.
