This article explores the evolution of soda ash production methods, highlighting shift towards more sustainable practices. Abstract Cement production causes 7.5% of global anthropogenic CO 2 emissions, arising from limestone decarbonation and fossil-fuel combustion 1–3 . Current strategies include substituting Portland clinker with supplementary materials, but these mainly arise in emitting processes, developing alternative binders none yet promises scale, or adopting carbon capture storage that still releases some emissions 4–8 However, used cement is potentially an abundant, decarbonated feedstock. Here we show recovered paste can be reclinkered if as a partial substitute for the lime–dolomite flux steel recycling nowadays. The resulting slag meet existing specifications blended effectively calcined clay limestone. process sensitive to silica content paste, alumina may come scrap, this adjusted easily. We proposed economically competitive, powered by emissions-free electricity, lead zero while also reducing lime requirements. supply scrap treble 2050, it likely more made per unit recycled. With material efficiency construction 9,10 , future requirements could met route.
