Water scarcity has been exacerbated in recent years due to factors including the expansion of industrialization and agricultural activities. The contaminants released by industries into surrounding water bodies include toxic aromatic molecules, dyes, heavy metals, which upon consumption pose a threat human life. development treatment technologies catalysts targeting these pollutants thus emerged as critical area research development. This chapter therefore focuses on providing comprehensive information application metal oxide semiconductor photocatalysis for range industrial pollutants. With focus mainly being titanium dioxide (TiO2), zinc (ZnO), tin (SnO2), cadmium (CdO), tungsten trioxide (WO3), synthesis modification methods enhancement photocatalytic efficiencies materials is discussed. Their physical, morphological, optical properties are compared, mechanisms behind their activities reported.

The Colombian mining industry has witnessed significant growth. Depending on the scale and mineral extracted, complex chemical mixtures are generated, impacting health of occupationally exposed populations communities near projects. Increasing evidence suggests that chromosomal instability (CIN) is an important link between development certain diseases exposure to mixtures. To better understand effects we performed a biomonitoring study 407 healthy individuals from four areas: three located in municipalities exploiting different-scale systems reference area with no activity. Large, medium, small-scale were analyzed Montelibano (Córdoba), artisanal (ASGM) Nechí (Antioquia), closed system Aranzazu (Caldas). activity was established Montería (Córdoba). ICP-MS measured multi-elemental hair, CIN evaluated using cytokinesis-block micronucleus technique (MNBN). Exposure elements comparable workers residents areas but significantly higher compared individuals. In Montelibano, increased MNBN frequencies associated combined Se, Hg, Mn, Pb, Mg. This distinct pattern differed other areas. Specifically, Nechí, Cr, Ni, Mg emerged as primary contributors elevated MNBN. contrast, combination Hg Ni played role increasing Aranzazu. Interestingly, Se consistently correlated across all active Chemical exhibit broader range zones, reflecting characteristics high-impact large-scale area. research provides valuable insights into mixtures, underscoring importance employing this approach risk assessment communities, especially those residential

In recent years, there has been an increase in environmental catastrophes involving mining dam failures. This study assessed the potential risks of iron ore tailings riparian soils to human health after worst collapses recorded Brazil: from Córrego do Feijão Mine-CFM and Fundão. Chemical monitoring data three-year time interval since were used estimate risk indexes for trace elements such as arsenic, cadmium, chromium, mercury, nickel, lead, zinc. both case studies, adult group indicated a propensity development non-carcinogenic diseases through ingestion, inhalation dermal pathways all contaminated areas. Overall, children showed exacerbated sensitivity possible cancerous non-cancerous effects, especially areas surrounding dams Barra Longa, São José Goiabal, Novo, Veneza, Periquito, Governador Valadares, Tumiritinga, Conselheiro Pena, Honório Fraga Linhares (from Fundão dam) CFM dam. These assessments demonstrate that regions with activities, cumulative effects over are harmful expected. Therefore, is need greater supervision by competent government bodies conservation practices enable recovery or mitigation their impacts, ensuring appropriate well-being conditions local residents workers.

At present, states and entire regions that possess significant reserves of sought-after minerals have great potential to maintain even improve their socio-economic position in the foreseeable future. Since beginning 2000, increase mining volumes has been more than 50%; however, half all extracted raw materials fall only five leading countries: China, USA, Russian Federation, Australia, India. This article presents results analysis global structure mineral production by type geographic region. The provides an in-depth world’s companies, identifying key players industry. Lyophilization is a widely employed long-term preservation method in which the bacterial survival rate largely depends on cryoprotectant used. Bacillus cereus strain PBC was selected for its ability to thrive environments contaminated with arsenic, lead, and cadmium, tolerate 500 ppm of free cyanide, presence genes such as ars, cad, ppa, dap, among others, associated bioremediation toxic compounds enterotoxins (nheA, nheB, nheC). Following lyophilization, rates Mannitol 2.5%, 10%, Glucose 1% were 98.02%, 97.12%, 96.30%, respectively, being lower than 95% other sugars. However, during storage, same sugars, 78.71%, 99.97%, respectively. In cake morphology, it found that lyophilized morphology showed no relationship rate. The best glucose since maintained constant elevated growth ensuring unique characteristics bacterium preserved over time. These findings hold significant implications research they report new potential be utilized processes.

Mining activities, particularly in large excavations like the Bingham Canyon Copper Mine Utah, have been increasingly linked to respiratory conditions due heavy-metal-enriched waste and dust. Operating continuously since 1906, contributes 4.4% of Salt Lake Valley PM2.5 pollution. However, extent its contributions larger-sized particulate matter (PM10) dust, soil water contamination, human health impacts is largely unknown. Aerosol optical depth data from Sentinel-2 imagery revealed discernible dust clouds downwind mine smelter on non-prevailing-wind days, suggesting potential heavy metal dispersion this fugitive subsequent deposition nearby surface soils. Our analysis topsoils across western found mean arsenic, copper, lead, zinc concentrations be well above global background concentrations. Also, minimum values for arsenic maximum lead were US EPA regional screening levels residential Thus, greatest concern health. Elevated all metals most notable near mine, smelter, tailings pond. study these elevated asthma outcomes through cluster distance-related comparison tests. Significant clusters high rates observed regions with topsoil concentrations, impacting both low- high-income neighborhoods.
