In low-permeability sandstone reservoirs (LPSR), impermeable interlayers significantly challenge carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) enhance oil recovery (CO2-EOR) processes by creating complex, discontinuous flow units. This study aims to address these challenges through a comprehensive multi-faceted approach integrating geological microscopic analyses, including core analysis, reservoir petrography, field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), well-logging response utilizing three-dimensional (3D) modeling. The current investigation systematically characterizes interlayer types, petrophysical properties, thickness, connectivity, their spatial distribution in the unit. Numerical simulations were conducted assess sealing efficiency impact of various materials on CO2 flooding over 10-year period. Results indicate presence argillaceous interlayers, with optimal occurring barriers ≥ 4 m 1.5 thick. leakage occurs preferential pathways that emerge side-to-middle bottom-to-top direction interbeds, multidirectional showing greater at bottom compared upper side within barriers. Increased thickness constraints breakthrough but reduces vertical area production ratio homogeneous reservoirs. Augmented interbed mitigate time while constraining gravity override dispersion effects, enhancing horizontal displacement. These novel findings provide crucial insights for optimizing CCUS-EOR strategies LPSR, offering robust theoretical foundation future applications serving as key reference utilization challenging settings LPSR worldwide.

Abstract The stability of faults must be evaluated carefully for reliable and successful geological CO2 storage (GCS) projects, especially in reservoirs with abundant fractures faults. induced slip reactivation fractured can create significant leakage pathways. Therefore, investigating the geomechanical response on through hydromechanical coupled simulations is crucial but challenging. It requires constructing fine computational grids that conform to faults, which arduous 3D field-scale settings. This study aims develop a numerical method does not require finely gridding near equivalent continuum (ECM) adopted efficiently model interactions assess risk fault activation during GCS reservoirs. In this work, we described simulation framework faulted natural formations. constitutive relations are rigorously derived from stressstrain analysis, permeability calculated based seepage resistance method. A hybrid discretization used solve geomechanical-flow system flow discretized using finite volume method, by element We established reservoir crossed tectonic investigated spatial convergence compared its accuracy an extremely mesh. analyzed influence damage zone properties both mesh size requirements tendency ECM. finally simulated case several GEOS simulator investigate Mohr-Coulomb criterion. Numerical have demonstrated practical applicability proposed approach modeling geomechanics GCS. mechanical zone, particularly Young's modulus Poisson's ratio, only optimal selection ECM implementation also significantly affect assessment. According allocation relationship between regional seal vertical extension roughly divided into embedded, lower-broken, broken-through modes. Among these, mode presents highest special attention. work introduces simulate field scale, eliminating need fractures. Furthermore, it provides perspective analysis case.

The integrity of wellbore sealing is vital for carbon dioxide sequestration. carbonation metakaolin-based geopolymer under conditions 50 °C and 10 MPa was experimentally studied. Furthermore, thermodynamic simulation utilized to analyze the geopolymer. experimental results show that unreacted raw materials granular precursors remain after hydration After 28 days corrosion, a substantial quantity sodium aluminosilicate hydrate gel produced; however, macro-cracks develop on surface sample, resulting in decrease strength. Thermodynamic revealed dawsonite, Clinoptilolite-(K), Heulandite-(Ca) excellent resistance corrosion. Moreover, an increase temperature enhances mineral phases carbonation. However, higher concentration aqueous solution accelerates rate In presence ions sulfate solution, Chabazite-(Na) Stilbite-(K) consume more during leading increased dawsonite formation. Low-calcium are suitable developing corrosion-resistant cementing slurry system.
