Abstract Background The residential heating sector in many European countries requires a fundamental transformation if it is to become climate neutral. Besides the introduction of efficiency measures and updating systems, scholars practitioners consider replacing fossil fuels existing systems viable approach. Drop-in renewable gases such as biomethane synthetic natural gas (SNG) cause considerably fewer carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions than can be used boilers, dominant system countries. To move ongoing debate around e-fuels forward, this study reports on Discrete Choice Experiment with 512 respondents Germany that analyzed consumer preferences willingness pay (WTP) for SNG. I build these insights by comparing WTP production costs, making evidence-based decision-making possible. Results results show consumers prefer over gas. Comparing two types gases, SNG biomethane, reveals clearly favor latter despite criticism has come under last 10–15 years. Consumers surprisingly high increasing shares SNG, premia 40 almost 70% gas-based tariff. costs only tariffs small (5% 10%) offered at cost-covering prices. Conclusions Given urgent need transition sector, marketers policymakers should carefully whether worth channeling rather unknown expensive product like into voluntary market gas, especially already established cheaper more popular alternative.

The transition to low- and zero-carbon fuels is the primary driver for reducing emissions in maritime industry, with methanol natural gas emerging as most promising options. However, carbon-based will continue emit considerable amounts of pollutants during their use phase. This work explores application circular economy principles shipping industry by integrating carbon capture utilization technologies. Specifically, we propose a closed-loop system where dioxide (CO2) generated onboard captured using chemical absorption technology stored until ship reaches port. CO2 then unloaded transported fuel production facility, it reacts electrolytic hydrogen regenerate required propulsion fuel. Here, evaluate economic, technical, future environmental viability marine fuels. Our findings indicate that could achieve 65% reduction 2050, while lead 55%, both 91% rate. there an economic premium 339 USD tonCO2 -1 260 gas. Additionally, shift expected increase costs factor 3-6 compared conventional operations.
