Can a just transition achieve decarbonization? Explaining fossil fuel community opposition in the Canadian Oil Sands DOI

Just transition policies are widely viewed as one of the most effective mechanisms for compensating and building support decarbonization in fossil fuel communities. However, early empirical work suggests that many coal-producing regions remain opposed to even when just proposed or implemented. In this study, I add nuance existing accounts by analyzing data from 18 interviews with oil gas workers community members Canadian Oil Sands, world's third-largest reserve. show how those living working Sands skeptical renewable energy, optimistic about long-term viability fuels, strongly oppose proposal a transition. These responses patterned feelings fear, exclusion, resentment towards motives actors driving decarbonization, which argue demonstrates threatened sense ontological security. Introduction Appealing to individuals’ social identity is a powerful form of influence, capable changing the way people process information, information they think about, and how evaluate other individuals. The purpose this study explore idea that Democrat Republican environmental norms may impact attributes strategies partisans use when choosing whether have solar panels on house. Methods An online with N = 363 participants was conducted examine these possible effects through multi-attribute decision making, applying predefined models participant behavior test which attribute-based best describe participants’ making. A choice task combined an experimental manipulation political affiliation salience groups would influence behavior. Results show remarkable similarities between parties in their for panels. Members both appeared similar formation decisions. Discussion Recommendations are made science communicators policy makers avoid polarizing language so as not create unnecessary polarization where ideological gaps currently exist.
