This study addresses the pressing need for standardized methodologies to quantify microplastics (MPs) within fine fraction of municipal solid waste (MSW), often overlooked despite its potential environmental impact. Five extraction protocols were evaluated identify most effective method isolating MPs in waste. These specifically applied samples from Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana and one transfer station Mexico City. A potassium hydroxide digestion protocol with subsequent flotation centrifugation steps achieved optimal results, ensuring complete organic matter degradation high microplastic recovery. Subsequent analyses revealed notable concentrations MPs, primarily fragments fibers, higher abundance at university site. Statistical tests confirmed significant differences between sample sites. findings highlight vulnerability MSW fractions contamination underline importance targeted management strategies. research contributes understanding behavior systems emphasizes mitigation efforts prevent contamination.

Nearly one-third of the entire U.S. food supply is sent to landfills. As decomposes, it emits methane, a potent greenhouse gas that fuels global warming. To reduce emissions and create more circular system, states across country are mandating waste diversion from landfills through several mechanisms, includ­ing composting. In 2016, California passed Senate Bill 1383 (SB-1383), which requires organic (including food) in part by municipal procurement recy­cled products. comply with SB-1383, city Albany, California, established Compost Distribution Hub April 2023 part­nership an urban community farm distrib­ute free compost community.
