Abstract The Southwest Atlantic (SWA) is an important region for the Caretta caretta characterized by unique genetic lineages; however, their life history still misunderstood. In this study, we evaluated demographic patterns of four SWA rookeries using D-loop and microsatellites data looking expansion bottlenecks signals. Then, simulated several colonization scenarios Approximate Bayesian Computation. best-supported scenario indicated that loggerheads might have colonized once ancient lineage ES/k4 signals a sharing ancestry history, from it originated other lineages divergence introgression processes, explaining high admixture levels between clusters. recovered population stability in past, but identified sharp recent bottleneck events, which may been triggered Last Glacial Maximum, El Niño Southern Oscillation, anthropogenic actions. Thus, provide, first time, complete assessment loggerhead into SWA, demonstrating differences markers (matrilinear biparental) bias our understanding patterns, should be considered conservation programs at global scale.

We searched for an extraction method that would allow a precise quantification of metal(loid)s in milligram-size samples using high-resolution graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (HR-GFAAS). digested biological (DORM-4, DOLT-5 and TORT-3) sediment (MESS-4) certified reference materials (CRMs) nitric acid drying oven, aqua regia or microwave. In addition, we MESS-4 mixture hydrofluoric acids oven. also evaluated the effect sample size (100 200 mg) on efficiency. Nitric oven yielded greatest recovery rates all tested CRMs (80.0 %-100.0 %) compared with other methods (67.3 %-99.2 %). most cases, did not have significant Therefore, conclude digestion is reliable to quantify HR-GFAAS. This validated could provide substantial benefits environmental quality monitoring programs by significantly reducing time costs required collection, storage, transport preparation, as well amount hazardous chemicals used during analysis. •Sample from materials.•The ranged 73 % 100 %.•Digestion simple extract small spectrometry.

Initiatives such as the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development and Seabed 2030 promote seabed mapping worldwide. In Brazil, especially on Espírito Santo Continental Shelf, high-resolution has revealed an unknown complex seascape. Circular depressions (CDs) were mapped first time in Costa das Algas Marine Protection Area. Herein, we aim to present CD metrics characteristics discuss their relationship with morphology relevance a habitat based multibeam bathymetry ground truthing. A total 3660 between 46 85 m depth, reaching area 460 m2 5 relief. The continental shelf was subdivided into three sectors morphology: inter-valleys, valley edges, flanks, eleven sites selected direct sampling/imaging at CDs along sectors. sampling carried out by scuba-diving video images sediment samples collected inside outside depressions. deeper central parts circular appear function sink, presenting aggregations rhodoliths or other carbonate fragments. most inter-valley depressions, mounds observed edges depression. We did not have any indication gas seeps no clear sedimentological morphological control occurrence. hypothesize that origin results from combined diachronous processes. high resolution could be related sea level processes acting during last glacial period exposure, i.e., relict features. are responsible biomass aggregation fish bioturbation, forming holes rubble mounds, representing modern process occurring centimetric scale. data so far indicate this fine-scale feature is important different species. maintenance these structures due low sedimentation regime areas shaped biotic excavation.
