Pharmaceutical compounds are micropollutants of emerging concern, as well other classes chemicals such UV filters and artificial sweeteners. They enter marine environments via wastewater treatment plants, aquaculture runoff, hospital effluents, shipping activities. While many studies have investigated the presence distribution these pollutants in numerous coastal areas, our study is first to focus on their occurrence, spatial distribution, vertical sea surface microlayer (SML) near-surface layer environments. We analyzed 62 pharmaceutical compounds, one filter, six sweeteners from SML corresponding underlying water (0 cm, 20 50 100 150 cm) at four stations southern North Sea. One station enclosed Jade Bay, Weser estuary Bremerhaven, two (NS_7 NS_8) open German Bight. Bay receives surrounding while cities like which has dense populations industrial Concentrations were higher upper layers (from cm). Eleven (caffeine, carbamazepine, gemfibrozil, ibuprofen, metoprolol, salicylic acid, clarithromycin, novobiocin, clindamycin, trimethoprim, tylosin) detected >95 % samples. filter (benzophenone-4) was found 83 three (acesulfame, saccharin, sucralose) all All posed high risks freshwater invertebrate Daphnia magna. The integration of effect-based and chemical profiling has been advocated to assess the potential ecotoxicological risks posed by mixtures present in aquatic ecosystems. However, concentrations contaminants surface waters can vary greatly over time space, making it challenging ensure risk assessment. Although first results are promising, not yet proven that these combined approaches also capable capturing temporal variation risks. study aimed test this combining passive time-integrative sampling with chemical-analytical techniques agricultural waterways. Silicone rubber sheets polar organic integrative samplers (POCIS) were deployed four water bodies consecutive six-week periods. Passive sampler extracts analysed using a battery 22 vitro vivo bioassays tandem extensive target analysis 225 compounds. induced fluctuating bioassay responses for all locations during periods, highlighting presence spatial toxic pressure. A range compounds, primarily fungicides herbicides, detected periods at variable concentrations, persistent but pressure regions. toxicity observed could solely be attributed chemicals 6 % cases those explaining only 1-16.9 effects, indicating predominantly caused undetected chemicals. Risk assessments based on revealed frequent exceedances trigger values It is concluded better capture variations than traditional analyses, advanced needed explain bioanalytical response profiles.

The vast amount of registered chemicals leads to a high diversity substances occurring in the environment and creation new outpaces chemical risk assessment as well monitoring strategies. Hence, strategies need be modified ensuring that they remain aligned with rapid development marketing substances. Here we performed longitudinal chronic mixture considering real-world case study scenario diverse anthropogenic impact types characterised by different land uses along river Central Germany. We sampled water using large-volume solid phase extraction at six selected sampling sites. Following analysis liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry, quantified 192 For 34 % them, obtained empirical effect data for freshwater organisms. This study comprises a critical review of modeling pesticides in surface waters. The aim was to update the status use models simulate fate from diffuse sources. ISI papers were selected on Scopus and information concerning areas, type (herbicides, fungicides insecticides), model, methodology adopted (i.e., calibration and/or validation, spatial temporal scales) analyzed. studies carried out Europe (55.5%), North America (22.3%), Asia (13.9%) South (8.3%). Soil Water Assessment Tool proved be most used model (45.95%). Herbicides modeled (71.4%), followed by insecticides (18.2%) (10.4%). main herbicides atrazine, metolachlor, isoproturon, glyphosate, acetochlor. Insecticides such as chlorpyrifos metaldehyde. Chlorothalonil, tebuconazole) widely investigated. Based published studies, it found that approaches for assessing are constantly evolving algorithms work well with diverse watershed conditions, management strategies, pesticide properties. Several reported concentrations exceeding ecotoxicological thresholds revealing water contamination agriculture urban areas is priority issue current global concern.

Ecosystems are strongly influenced by multiple anthropogenic stressors, including a wide range of chemicals and their mixtures. Studies on the effects stressors have largely focussed nonchemical whereas studies chemical mixtures ignored other stressors. In Africa, coping with the growing pressure of resource demand due to fast population growth and socio-economic development remains one major challenges 21st century. By 2050, energy water are projected rise by 80% 55%, respectively, while meet food demand, agricultural production needs approximately 50% more than in 2017. As continent continues skyrocket, these shifts threaten water-energy-food-ecosystem (WEFE) security, dangering their access availability. The region exhibits minimal performance WEFE, mainly because expertise insecurity sectors. However, WEFE nexus has emerged as a new technique address challenging situations Africa. This research become necessary effectively security impartiality management. Therefore, applying strategy, prioritizing coexisting water, energy, resources, embraces possibility enhancing entire scenery paper examines current scenario through multidisciplinary viewpoints, identifying main issues potential solutions. findings from this study show that virtually half people starving, about 20% malnourished, 47% lack electricity, 36% cannot provide basic amenities. Hence, provides valuable insights for researchers, policymakers, experts working towards sustainable Achieving involves combined arrangements exploit synergies alleviate trade-offs.
