Rare earth elements (REEs) are a new type of material resource which have attracted significant attention in recent years. REEs emerged as essential metals modern-day technology due to their unique functions. The long-term, large-scale mining and utilization rare earths has caused serious environmental pollution constitutes global health issue, raised concerns regarding the safety human health. However, toxicity profile suspended particulate matter environment, interacts with body, remains largely unknown. Studies shown that can enter body through variety pathways, leading organ system dysfunctions changes genetics, epigenetics, signaling pathways. Through an extensive literature search critical analysis, we provide comprehensive overview available evidence, identify knowledge gaps, make recommendations for future research directions.

The ubiquitous use of rare earth elements (REEs) in modern living environments raised concern about their impact on human health. With the detrimental and beneficial effects REEs reported by different studies, genuine role body remains a mystery. This study explored association between genetic mutations patients with lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD). A cohort 53 LUAD underwent tumor DNA sequencing (1123 cancer-related genes) plasma REE (lanthanum (La), cerium (Ce), praseodymium (Pr), neodymium (Nd), yttrium (Y)) quantification. We found divergent relationships levels mutation load sexes. Specifically, Ce were positively correlated males but negatively females, while La exposure exhibited opposite associations two observation was validated using Bayesian Kernel Machine Regression (BKMR) model. Additionally, associated specific types variant allele frequencies (VAFs) particular genes sex-dependent manner. Mutational signature analysis revealed sex-specific indel signatures. These findings highlight intricate interplay LUAD, emphasizing need for personalized, sex-oriented approach to understand treat this disease.

As a light rare earth element, Sm and Sm2O3 are widely used in various fields such as electronics, chemistry, medicine. Their distribution the environment, accumulation biological organisms exposure through medicinal pathways have attracted increasing public attention. It is crucial to clarify impact of on human health. In this study, we applied 24 h post-fertilization (hpf) zebrafish embryos investigated toxic effects mechanisms Sm2O3. The results showed that induced developmental abnormalities embryos, prominent pericardial swelling, slight curvature spine, decreased body length. incidence significantly increased. scanning electron microscopy transmission accumulated shortening or disappearance microcrest skin cells. Lyz-fish system demonstrated macrophages migrated skin, suggesting caused damage. Laser confocal revealed heart ventricles exhibited compensatory ventricular atrophy, abnormal rates. Acridine orange (AO) staining obvious green fluorescence. Embryos proteins at 96 hpf were extracted after treatment, revealing anti-apoptosis bcl-2 protein with an increase concentration. caspase-3 apoptosis executioner also concentration-dependent expression, indicating promotes cardiac tissue DCFH-DA significant reactive oxygen species (ROS) hearts brains zebrafish. summary, ROS activated apoptotic thereby inducing exhibiting toxicity. This study 3-day resulted edema, length reduction, macrophage migration, shortened micro-ridges Notably, anomalies included arrhythmia, which correlated elevated levels signals. Mechanistically, promoted downregulation Bcl-2 upregulation expression. These findings collectively reveal induces toxicity via activation caspase-dependent pathways, highlighting its potential hazards early vertebrate development.

Background/Objectives: Rare earth elements (REEs) are emerging environmental pollutants, with human exposure increasing due to recent industrial and technological activities. While most studies have focused on detecting REEs in fluids, their presence tissues remains understudied. Aortic valve degeneration is known facilitate the adsorption of various chemical elements; however, occurrence valves has not yet been investigated. This exploratory study aimed determine aortic patients stenosis undergoing surgical replacement. It also analyzed potential correlations between REE levels valves, epicardial adipose tissue, serum, selected disease markers. Methods: Samples valve, serum were collected from 20 adult elective The concentrations 14 these samples measured using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Biochemical clinical parameters considered explore associations determined levels. Results: Total REEs, heavy light fat, intercorrelated. Moreover, for any sample type, they significantly related patient’s demographics (age sex), characteristics (body index, heart failure severity, systolic pressure gradients), kidney function (estimated glomerular filtration rate), biochemical markers (creatinine, lipoprotein(a), total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, fibrinogen). Smoking was only factor influencing burden studied patients, active smokers revealing 61% higher past exhibiting 133% valvular deposition. Conclusions: findings suggest that accumulation occurs independently systemic but may be promoted by smoking, highlighting need investigate underlying mechanisms Given small size cross-sectional, hypothesis-generating design, observations should interpreted caution treated as preliminary. Larger, longitudinal needed validate results causal relationships. Further research include tissue originating individuals without comparison. A deeper understanding pathways health risks associated cardiovascular offer valuable insights into broader implications health.
