Despite growing concern about the large amounts of waste plastic in marine ecosystems, evidence an increase amount floating at sea has been mixed. Both at-sea surveys and ingested loads seabirds show inconsistent significant increases since 1980s. We use 3727 brown skua Catharacta antarctica regurgitations, each containing remains a single seabird, to monitor changes four seabird taxa breeding Inaccessible Island, Tristan da Cunha nine years from 1987 2018. Frequency occurrence ingestion types were compared across near-decadal time periods (1987-1989; 1999-2004; 2009-2014 2018) while among years. The number proportions industrial pellets decreased consistently over study period all taxa, suggesting that industry initiatives reduce pellet leakage have reduced numbers sea. global production increasing more than four-fold period, there was no consistent total any species. Plastic great shearwaters Ardenna gravis, which spend austral winter North Atlantic Ocean, increased 2018, but proportion decreased. conclude density not line with last 30

Microplastic pollution in the marine environment is of concern, with evidence harmful effects on biota and ecosystems. There still a knowledge gap mass plastics supplied to ocean observed ocean, indicating missing sink. Therefore, baseline monitoring data are needed inform policy regulatory measures. The goal this study was collect harmonised microplastics from surface using Neuston Catamaran. This shows that water coastal North Sea holds/sustains high concentrations microplastic, which exceed previously recorded measurements North-East Atlantic Scottish Waters, total stock might be much higher than determined. Microplastics were detected all samples ranging 857 25,462 items km −2 . majority analysed fragments polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene size range 1,000–5,000 µm. Mesoplastics (>5,000 µm) mainly form filaments found 0 2,139 , macroplastics also 1,078 These likely originate break-up common macrolitter environment, such as plastic bags, bottles, fishing gears, commonly comprised similar polymers those present study. Our findings demonstrate litters classes abundant water, highlighting it key compartment for transport litter should monitored better our understanding fate danger contamination ocean.

Ingestion of plastic can have negative health consequences for wildlife. However, our understanding the physiological impacts plastics is limited, often relying on opportunistic sampling. We partnered with Tasmanian Aboriginal seabird harvesters, wildlife rescue clinics, and parks managers, to collect >400 fledgling yula/short-tailed flesh-footed shearwaters across a spectrum body conditions. explored blood chemistry, trace elements, broadscale growth metrics as proxy in relation ingested plastic. found beached yula fledglings were smaller (wing cord mass) than other groups. no significant relationships detected between ingestion any parameter. Critically evaluated, findings are comparable exposure data from similar (petrel shearwater) studies globally. These results suggest that most same-size petrels shearwater populations worldwide probably below threshold where sub-lethal be expected, which we posit occurs when loads exceed 1-3 % mass. indicate need quantify dose-risk responses seabirds, more generally.

Marine plastic pollution is well described by bioindicator species in temperate and polar regions but remains understudied tropical oceans. We addressed this gap evaluating the seabird Barau's petrel as of South-West Indian Ocean. conducted a multifaceted approach including necropsies birds to quantify ingestion; GPS tracking breeding adults identify their foraging areas; manta trawling debris measure at sea modelling dispersal. developed spatial risk index exposure ingestion. Seventy-one percent analysed had ingested plastic. coupled with dispersal show that consistently foraged places high level concentration. The highest ingestion occurred northwest Reunion Island latitude 30°S. Our findings confirm reliable region.
