Abstract Despite numerous field studies focusing on the chemical composition of particulate matter, systematic investigations chloride (Cl − ) are scarce in China. This study examines spatiotemporal distribution, origin, and environmental impact Cl across China via compiling a comprehensive data set submicron aerosol (PM 1 detected by mass spectrometer (AMS). In addition, we integrated high‐time resolution from AMS at six representative sites for more detailed insights. The concentration is notably high (1.9 ± 2.7 μg m −3 comparison to global average (0.3 1.0 ), with distinguished N–S pattern (North > South) distinct seasonality (winter other seasons). Three categories diurnal variations were classified, suggesting primary combustion emission gas/particle partitioning main drivers dynamic variation . good correlation between tracers corroborates assertion that coal biomass anthropogenic sources based inventory. Furthermore, quantified impacts ammonium balances, liquid water content, hygroscopicity systematically explored. extreme cases, can enhance 100% ALWC during polluted periods, signifying its key role impacting physiochemistry aerosols. mutual promotion environment effects was also found. summary, this enhances our understanding sources, China, indicating should be considered elucidating effect fine particles.
