Abstract Biochar shows significant potential to serve as a globally applicable material remediate water and soil owing the extensive availability of feedstocks conducive physio-chemical surface characteristics. This review aims highlight biochar production technologies, characteristics biochar, latest advancements in immobilizing eliminating heavy metal ions organic pollutants water. Pyrolysis temperature, heat transfer rate, residence time, type feedstock are critical influential parameters. Abstract In the context of climate change and circular economy, biochar has recently found many applications in various sectors as a versatile recycled material. Here, we review application biochar-based for carbon sink, covering agronomy, animal farming, anaerobic digestion, composting, environmental remediation, construction, energy storage. The ultimate storage reservoirs are soils, civil infrastructure, landfills. Biochar-based fertilisers, which combine traditional fertilisers with nutrient carrier, promising agronomy. use feed additive animals shows benefits terms growth, gut microbiota, reduced enteric methane production, egg yield, endo-toxicant mitigation. Biochar enhances digestion operations, primarily biogas generation upgrading, performance sustainability, mitigation inhibitory impurities. composts, controls release greenhouse gases microbial activity. Co-composted improves soil properties crop productivity. Pristine engineered can also be employed water remediation to remove pollutants. added cement or asphalt, thus conferring structural functional advantages.
