Nanoplastics are suspected to pollute every environment on Earth, including very remote areas reached via atmospheric transport. We approached the challenge of measuring environmental nanoplastics by combining high-sensitivity TD-PTR-MS (thermal desorption-proton transfer reaction-mass spectrometry) with trained mountaineers sampling high-altitude glaciers ("citizen science"). Particles < 1 μm were analysed for common polymers (polyethylene, polyethylene terephthalate, polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene and tire wear particles), revealing nanoplastic concentrations ranging 2–80 ng mL− at five 14 sites. The dominant polymer types found in this study wear, particles (41%, 28% 12%, respectively). Research has shown microplastic particles to be pervasive pollutants in the natural environment, but labor-intensive sample preparation, data acquisition, and analysis protocols continue necessary navigate their diverse chemistry. Machine learning (ML) classification models have promise for identifying microplastics from Raman spectra, all attempts date focused on lower energy "fingerprint" region of spectrum. We explore strategies improve ML based k-nearest-neighbor algorithm by including other regions spectra. The information content inherent C–H bonds, which occur higher frequency 2500–3600 cm–1, is found particularly powerful improving model performance. Variations relative intensity peaks arising vibrations identification capabilities plastics that fingerprint alone struggles with, such as resolving acrylonitrile butadiene styrene polystyrene poly(vinyl chloride), polyurethane, polyoxymethylene. Microplastics (MPs) are emerging contaminants characterized by persistence, cross-media transport, and complex pollutant interactions, posing serious ecotoxicological risks to ecosystems human health. Effective MPs management requires multi-faced, long-term, strategies involving targeted sampling, quantitative detection, comprehensive risk assessments, all of which entail significant resource investment. Despite advancements in remediation technologies, a holistic governance framework integrating these innovations remains underdeveloped. This review synthesizes current knowledge on MPs, elaborating their diverse morphologies, degradation pathways, role as vectors for toxic substances. State-of-the-art extraction techniques evaluated this article, including micropore adsorption using nanocomposites, alongside the incorporation advanced analytical tools such spectroscopic methods, electron microscopy, bioinformatics augment environmental forensics. also underscores necessity formulating robust global policies regulate pollution discusses potential biodegradation thermal sustainable solutions removal. By promoting an interdisciplinary approach, advocates coordinated response, science, policy frameworks, waste mitigate escalating impact well-being.

Microplastics pollution is a growing environmental concern. However, microplastics studies in high altitude remote lakes are scarce. In this study, was assessed the shore sediment of three Ladakh Indian Himalaya, namely Pangong Lake, Tsomoriri Lake and Tsokar Lake. Sampling performed August 2019. Two different pretreatment methods were implemented with samples from same sites, resulting two sets samples. One set pretreated utilizing enzymatic degradation together Fenton reactions. Another sites 30 % hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) reaction. Enzymatically resulted higher concentrations than H2O2 samples, which indicated that varies even among site procedure may impact on reported concentrations. Soils play a very important role in ecosystems sustainability, either natural or agricultural ones, serving as an essential support for living organisms of different kinds. However, the current context extremely high plastic pollution, soils are highly threatened. Plastics can change chemical and physical properties may also affect biota. Of particular importance is fact that plastics be fragmented into microplastics and, to final extent nanoplastics. Due their low size surface area, nanoplastics even have higher impact soil ecosystems. Their transport through edaphic environment regulated by physicochemical particles themselves, anthropic activities biota interactions. degradation associated with series mechanical, photo-, thermo-, bio-mediated transformations eventually conducive mineralisation. tiny precisely main setback when it comes sampling subsequent processes identification quantification, albeit pyrolysis coupled gas chromatography-mass spectrometry other spectroscopic techniques proven useful analysis. Microplastic (MP) pollution is a major environmental concern for mountain ecosystem and high-mountain lakes in particular, which are recognized indicators of global change. In this study, the presence MPs was assessed abiotic (water sediment) biotic (zooplankton, tadpoles, fish) compartments two (Upper Lake Balma Lower Balma) Cottian Alps (northwest Italy). No were found water zooplankton samples, whereas mean sediment samples 1.33 ± 0.67 items/m3 1.75 0.62 Upper Balma, respectively. The tadpoles Rana temporaria 0.33 0.58 items/individual 0.66 number items gastrointestinal tract (GIT) fish (Salvelinus fontinalis) considerably higher specimens from (0.45 items/g GIT) than those (0.20 GIT). There negative relationship between size (weight age) abundance GIT fish, indicating that young accumulated more MP probably due to high prey ingestion rate compared adults. same color (blue, white, black), shape (fibers fragments), chemical type (polypropylene polyethylene) both lakes. Our findings suggest use S. fontinalis as an indicator Further studies needed better understand sources effects these remote ecosystems.
