Unraveling the Plastic Pollution in the Aquatic Environment of the Croatian Krk Island

The
assessment
of
plastic
pollution
due
to
microplastics
(MPs)
and
nanoparticles
(NPs)
was
performed
for
the
first
time
on
water
samples
from
four
natural
sites
located
near
beaches
Krk
Island,
Croatia,
namely
Melska,
Črnika,
rt
Šilo,
Zala.
MP
NP
occurrence
investigated
collected
during
December
2022
June
2023,
using
bulk
method
followed
by
filtration
stainless-steel
sieves
digestion
process.
Factor
analysis
Spearman’s
correlation
revealed
that
percentage
fragments
correlated
well
with
salinity
(ρ

Emerging
pollutants
such

microplastics
in
water
environments
readily
accumulate
microorganisms
on
their
surfaces,
forming
biofilms
and
concentrating
antibiotic-resistant
bacteria
(ARB)
antibiotic
resistance
genes
(ARGs).
Consequently,
microplastic
have
attracted
the
attention
of
researchers.
Horizontal
gene
transfer
(HGT)
ARGs
is
one
primary
ways
that
acquire
resistance.
Most
studies
focus
effects
nanomaterials
suspended
bacteria,
but
hotspots
for
horizontal
also
warrant
significant
investigation.
This
study
primarily
explored
compared
nano-titanium
dioxide
conjugation
frequency
biofilms.
Nano-titanium
could
promote
ARG

biofilms,
with
a
greater
effect

(ROS)

extracellular
polymeric
substances

weaker
impact
bacteria.
