As emerging contaminants, rare earth elements (REEs) have undergone significant anthropogenic enrichment in aquatic systems. This study investigates the REE concentrations, major metal elements, and grain size surface sediments from East Tiaoxi (ETX) River eastern China, a small urban river subjected to substantial influences. Total concentrations of ranged 133.62 222.92 mg/kg with MREE HREE depletion. concentration fractionation were strongly correlated Ca, Fe, Mg, Mn, which may reflect control clay minerals, Fe-Mn oxides, specific heavy differences behavior between riparian riverbed highlighted impact hydrodynamic sorting chemical weathering on distribution. Anthropogenic activities, particularly urbanization, found increase especially at urban-adjacent sites (e.g., RBS2 RS2), while natural processes such as soil transport primarily contributed variation other sites. The factor ecological risk assessment revealed that moderate risks associated REEs occurred adjacent urbanized areas, though agricultural impacts less pronounced. findings emphasize combined influence urbanization distribution ETX basin underscore need prioritize urban-derived contamination environmental management strategies.

In this study, the total content of REEs ranged from 1.32 to 67.74 μg/kg, with a predominant presence light REEs. The ΔEu and ΔCe values, which exceeded approached 1, respectively, indicated positive Eu anomalies low Ce anomalies.
