Microplastic (MP) pollution has emerged as a major environmental issue with significant health implications. Synthetic face masks (FMs) have been identified substantial source of MPs and chemical additives, posing risks to ecosystems human health. This systematic literature review examines the associated additives released from synthetic FMs explores behavioural factors influencing these risks. interdisciplinary perspective is not well-explored in existing offers new insights into field. Key findings indicate that are present newly manufactured FMs, likely generated during non-woven FM production process, various accelerating release additives. While studies highlight MP toxicity aquatic terrestrial organisms, there lack research addressing direct impact on Workplaces where used personal protective equipment may create conditions promote pollutant release; however, but predominantly focused secondary exposure via food chain, rather than use. Most centres COVID-19 pandemic, leaving gap understanding for individuals relying occupational safety or living areas poor air quality. The wide range concentration reported suggest inadequate regulation production. Future should focus evaluating long-term impacts FM-wearing behaviours assess levels, conducting cause-and-effect inform policy, developing sustainable alternatives.
