Organic farming is an essential component of sustainable agriculture that can help maintain biodiversity in agricultural landscapes, providing benefits for both human well-being and environmental conservation. Recent studies have highlighted the vital role insectivorous bats farmland ecosystems by controlling pest insect populations. Our research focuses on direct economic value bat insectivory woody crops, specifically apple orchards affected codling moth Cydia pomonella. We conducted exclusion experiment followed evaluation to estimate impact crop damage savings. results demonstrate presence significantly reduce caused C. pomonella, resulting a 32.1% reduction trees 50% total weight damaged apples per tree. This translates into estimated savings 551 €/ha/y reducing need insecticide applications, which negative impacts environment health. Moreover, lead higher yields protect quality product, profits farmers. findings highlight critical maintaining ecosystem services provide valuable information management ecosystems.

Abstract Background Long-term biomonitoring of macroinvertebrates is a popular and valuable approach for assessing the status freshwater ecosystems, identifying impact stressors, evaluating ecosystem health. Although macroinvertebrate-based can be effective in detecting changes distribution patterns community trends over time, crayfish often remain undetected or unreported by efforts despite their importance maintaining functioning aquatic ecosystems. Results By analyzing comprehensive database long-term macroinvertebrate time series, we found that most sampling methods assessment schemes detect both native non-native running waters if sites are continuously sampled. However, were detected to lesser extent fewer methods. Kick-net techniques prevailed as efficient capturing crayfish. substantial number series lacking data calls into question whether these sufficiently encapsulate populations accurately. The use other targeted such baited traps hand catching may provide more reliable estimate presence. Conclusions Given detrimental impacts decline populations, strongly recommend stakeholders managers incorporate combination approaches monitoring efforts. different taxonomic levels (family vs. genus species level) estimating biological indices tools cause delays new specie’s occurrences, hindering water quality management governments stakeholders. Therefore, whenever possible, call standardized studies strategies accurately address issues make recommendations going forward.

Expanding and managing current habitat species protection measures is at the heart of European biodiversity strategy. A structured approach needed to gain insights into such issues systematic conservation planning, which uses techniques from decision theory identify places actions that contribute most effectively policy objectives given a set constraints. Yet culturally historically determined landscapes make implementation any plans challenging, requiring an analysis synergies trade-offs before implementation. In this work, we review scientific literature for evidence previous planning approaches, highlighting recent advances success stories. We find conceptual characteristics studies likely reduced their potential in contributing better-informed decisions. outline pathways towards improving uptake multi-criteria various scales, particularly need (a) open data intuitive tools, (b) integration biodiversity-focused with multiple objectives, (c) accounting dynamic ecological processes functions, (d) better facilitation entry-points co-design practices scenarios stakeholders. By adopting these practices, might become more actionable adaptable implementable outcomes. This article part theme issue ‘Ecological novelty planetary stewardship: dynamics transforming biosphere’.
