Human cognitive skills have their limitations. Effective decision-making, however, requires a comprehensive assessment of the factors at stake. This work aims to examine how computational tools such as SimDec can support decision-making process and potentially provide more clarity though visualizations scenario decomposition individual decision-makers in day-to-day lives. Six real-life personal cases were tackled with different mathematical modelling approaches from simple single-equation functions multi-criteria decision-making. The resulting interaction case protagonists analytics turned static-decision framework into dynamic which, some cases, even led restructuring entire situation.

“Real world” risk analysis in environmental contexts frequently requires the need to contrast numerous uncertain factors simultaneously and communicate difficult-to-capture interactions. Monte Carlo simulation modelling of complex sytems is employed integrate inputs construct probability distributions resulting outputs. Visual analytics data visualization can then be for processing, analyzing, communicating influence any multi-variable uncertainties on system. The decomposition (SimDec) analytical technique has recently been assessments systems. SimDec proved beneficial revealing interdependencies models, lowering computational burdens, facilitating decision-maker perceptions, especially, making components visualizable. It demonstrated that many findings would not have revealed without coloured visualizations provided by SimDec. However, an ad hoc colouring scheme distribution output neither sufficient nor capable producing much key visualizable information requisite effective analysis. Instead, approach referred as intelligent proposed. This paper outlines, highlights, demonstrates importance best-practices needed

To solve sequential decision-making problems in practice, modelling assumptions are made to make the tractable. A partially observable Markov decision process (POMDP) is a mathematical framework for and solved using planning or reinforcement learning algorithms. In this work, we develop analyze sensitivity of POMDPs across various model fidelities. We introduce POMDP model-fidelity (PMFF), where fidelities state uncertainty (i.e. belief), environment, planner, inference algorithm analyzed. use Simulation Decomposition (SimDec) quantitatively study variance output performance metrics (e.g. returns accuracy) given different input apply PMFF SimDec real-world case critical mineral exploration, results example suggest that with lower-fidelity models may be sufficient decision-making.

The assessment of investment projects relies on plentiful assumptions and combines significant uncertainty with rapidly accumulating complexity. However, the tools commonly employed in this discipline are far from ideal often fail to capture required level complexity adequately assist wide spectrum disparate needs various decision-makers. This chapter shows how Simulation Decomposition (SimDec) can improve decisions by shifting focus static invest-or-not decision rules towards dynamic, actionable project design mindsets. After introducing cash flow modelling, a case model is analyzed using SimDec illustrate method's context-specific capabilities. not only captures uncertainties reveals which factors most important but also different combinations them shape overall profitability project. adopts multistakeholder perspective, informal language, analogies shortfalls traditional approaches appraisal.

One of the defining characteristics deep tech ventures is that their technology could be adapted to multiple applications. In addition choosing market segment company will focus on, need first make a choice about how develop and then choose opportunity target. For instance, tool from The Lean Startup toolkit, called Market Opportunity Navigator, helps firms select opportunity. this chapter, we expand also reflect earlier development high level uncertainty surrounds these decisions. A simulated case (based on real venture) used demonstrate novel Technology Navigator. Due additional complexity resulting model, sensitivity analysis tool, SimDec, was employed provide insights into different dimensions decision. We show visualized results can incorporated back firm's strategy process. chapter contributes entrepreneurship literature by showing reduce decision-making uncertainty. contribute qualitative, multi-criteria supported SimDec.

Superconducting magnets are typically used for high-field applications such as particle accelerators physics investigation. Their design and operation entail considerable forces that could damage or break the brittle Nb3Sn alloy in their coils. For this reason, these feature a support structure around superconducting coils designed to hold them place while ensuring they will not break. The conception of is performed via consecutive magnetic mechanical finite-element simulations different options. In chapter, SimDec analyze effects combinations choices on performance structural viability magnet.

Power-to-X (P2X) technology holds great potential for decarbonization and sees an active growth of R&D, pilot projects, scaling initiatives. Such projects are surrounded by tremendous uncertainty due to their long lifespan, dependency on market policy evolution, high upfront costs. Thus, the usage adequate analytical tools is paramount importance design, evaluate, execute P2X projects.
