Abstract This chapter takes stock of the growing attention for geoengineering technologies. It is an exercise in speculative futuring at same time. reflects on what most likely lies ahead if environmental politics continues its current trajectory within dramaturgical regime ecological modernization. The contends that, this regime, there only one path political action: that leads to ever larger, riskier, and more technological ‘solutions’. If remains intact, possible futures willing entertain will continue be determined by funnel was created over decades-long evolution project modernization development. rhetorical dominance one-dimensional targets—for example, global average surface temperatures—will promote clearly defined measures suggest a means address gaps left failure meet our targets. combination failing with frequent emergencies active promotion heroic solutions capture public imagination. Zooming case solar geoengineering, investigate such dynamics practice. Tracing history as feature human–nature interaction Western science, it argues logical next step prevailing politics, both terms legitimizing own potential deliver climate targets insurance against catastrophic change.

The transition toward renewable energy includes a need for equitable outcomes, yet critical research gap exists in understanding the relationship between deployment and justice within International Energy Agency (IEA) member nations. This study addresses this by thoroughly examining influence of on across 23 IEA nations from 1995 to 2020. We employ advanced econometric techniques such as two-step system generalized method moment investigate linkage justice. By considering various dimensions justice, provides holistic assessment positive Significantly, we uncover that greater share substantially enhances levels, highlighting importance policies prioritizing social inclusion shedding light addressing gap, our contributes advancing knowledge These insights hold substantial implications policymakers, providing valuable guidance formulating strategies promote sustainable outcomes during transition.

Literature has highlighted the existence of a gap in clean fuel usage between social groups most emerging nations across world, which is detrimental to global efforts achieve Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 7 (access energy) and SDG 10 (reducing inequalities) just energy transition with recognition justice. This paper, assesses India using three rounds representative data (2004, 2014, 2018) by applying logit model, exogenous switching treatment effect regression (ESTER), Blinder–Oaxaca Decomposition Model. Such an analysis instrumental identifying its causes, thereby providing insight policymakers design policies carbon neutrality 2060. The results show substantive India, cause concern for transition. Clean utilization gaps among are alarming geographical locations consumption quartiles, highlighting importance justice that rural areas, only 19.6 % General Caste households 14.5 disadvantaged (Scheduled Tribes, Scheduled Castes, Other Backward Class) quartile one use energy, while urban shares 60.4 46.3 %, respectively. To distribution benefits transition, should focus on simultaneously target from lower economic status those residing indicating need targeting neglected regions.

Abstract Environmental politics as we know it cannot deliver. Despite all efforts is unable to bend the ecological trends. This book argues this because environmental captured. capture doesn’t just express itself in a lobbying or lack of political will, but more profoundly its ideas about future, inability imagine futures meaningfully different from present. Examining drama reveals how actors play their particular roles: scientists funnel narrow policy through models; activists adopt politically expedient language; policymakers look for safe, technologically sound win-win solutions. All are captured regime modernization that entertains too solution space. There every reason be concerned capture. If continues follow dominant script modernization, ever-more speculative technologies will appear desperate attempt safeguard future. Drawing on discourse and dramaturgical analysis, Captured Futures mechanisms capture, explains persistence speculates geoengineering waiting wings. Yet third part book, analysis hope, sketching an alternative perspective politics. A new, cultural approach could have leverage societal imagination. In combination with formulation new discourses using ‘dramaturgies change’ shows ways liberate

European countries are facing a dual challenge in 2022 with regard to how reimagine energy security after cutting ties Russian energy, but without undermining the imperative for continent-wide transition. In this article, sociotechnical imaginaries framework is utilised capture broader dynamics beyond typical connotation of through supply-side economics. This implemented by situating discursive struggles over framing global transition and dependence on Russia vis-à-vis predominant visions Finland. By utilising argumentative discourse analysis based interview documentary data focusing debates Finland during 2015–2019, article uncovers connected potentially reframing them. The identified tensions focused 1) future should be governed, 2) whether threat or reliable trading partner supplier 3) approach relation security. While focus controversies, also identifies increasing coherence attaining both sustainability goals. There attempts imagine futures more fashion that would societal broadly. ways imagining development coproduced technologies tend constrained techno-economic rationality. Up early months 2022, typically undermined political risks favour interdependence market-driven liberalism, widely shared across Union.
