Transitioning
to
electric
vehicles
(EVs)
is
a

strategy

carbon
dioxide

air
pollutant

reduced
gasoline
combustion

growing
EV
manufacturing
activities
remain
understudied.
Here,
we
focus
on
China
India,
two
fastest-growing
markets.
Compared
2030
baseline
scenario,
find
that
national
emissions
pollutants
could
increase
in
certain
high
penetration
scenarios
as
result
emission-intensive
battery
material
production
processes.
Notably,
sulfur
by
16-20%
if
all
batteries
have
nickel-
cobalt-based
cathodes
produced
domestically.
Subnational
regions
abundant
battery-related
minerals
might
emerge
future
pollution
hotspots.
Our
study
thus
highlights
importance
supply
chain
decisions
related
processes
understanding
environmental
transition.
