Abstract
Urban
Digital
Twin
(UDT)
technology
is
increasingly
recognised
as
a
promising
tool
for
designing
and
developing
sustainable,
resilient
urban
environments.
Nonetheless,
the
current
literature
lacks
comprehensive
understanding
of
UDTs’
applications
in
built
environment.
Therefore,
this
study
addresses
identified
gap
by
analysing
scholarly
industry
reports
connected
to
UDT
implementations.
The
results
scientometric
analysis
revealed
five
key
research
fields
including:
(i)
monitoring
controlling,
(ii)
smart
planning,
(iii)
environmental
management,
(iv)
decision-making,
(v)
sustainable
cities.
Further,
analysed
10
on
identify
practical
insights
evaluate
industry-driven
approaches
implementing
solutions
Despite
progress,
findings
indicate
absence
clear,
structured
process
facilitate
consistent
implementation,
scalability,
interoperability
technology.
This
further
highlights
need
globally
guidelines
well-defined
KPIs
fully
realise
its
potential
also

new
classification
model
developed
from

rapid

twin
(DT)
applications

industrial
to
urban
contexts.
However,
current
twins
(UDTs)
remain
predominantly
focused
on
the
physical
aspects

(“spaces”),
often
overlooking
interwoven
social
dimensions
that
shape
concept
“place”.
This
limitation
restricts
their
ability

represent
complex
interplay
between

address
this
gap,

(UDTs)

Seven
years
later,
we
ask:
What
has
been
their
contribution
to
urban
planning
and
decision
making
so
far?
Here,
systematically
review
88
peer-reviewed
articles
map
compare
UDTs’
ambitions
with
realized
contributions.
Our
results
indicate
that
despite
the
vast
technical
developments,
socio-technical
challenges
have
remained
largely
unaddressed,
causing
many
of
remain
unrealized.
We
identify
three
categories
these
challenges:
interdisciplinary
integration
(II),
consensual
contextualization
(CC),
procedural
operationalization
