Abstract The efficient co‐production of H 2 and CH 4 via anaerobic digestion (AD) requires separate stages, as it cannot yet be achieved in one step. Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) ( Limosilactobacillus ) release acetate by enhancing hydrolysis, potentially increasing production with simultaneous accumulation. This study investigated the enhanced effect one‐step AD LAB elucidated its enhancement mechanisms. results showed that 236.3 times increase 7.1 are achieved, resulting profits 469.39 USD. Model substrates lignocellulosic straw, sodium acetate, confirmes work on hydrolysis stage subsequent sustainable volatile fatty during first 6 days AD. In this stage, enrichment carrying bglB xynB , glycolysis pathway, high activity protease, kinase, [FeFe] hydrogenase, jointly rapid accumulation, driving hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis dominated. From day 7 to 24, enriched Methanosarcina increased methenyltetrahydromethanopterin hydrogenase activity, continuously produced led mainly acetoclastic shift from methanogenesis. power generation capacity LAB‐enhanced is 333.33 China's 24,000 m 3 biogas plant.

Excessive production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) induced by micro/nanoplastics (MPs/NPs) is highly toxic to microbes. However, the mechanisms underlying ROS generation and metabolic regulation within anaerobic guilds remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigated effects environmentally relevant levels polypropylene (PP)-MPs/NPs on oxidative stress microbial ecology during digestion (AD). Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy revealed that PP-MPs/NPs elevated concentrations persistent free radicals (EPFRs) derived hydroxyl (•OH). EPFRs were identified as primary contributors •OH generation, evidenced a high Spearman correlation coefficient (r = 0.884, p < 0.001) radical-quenching studies. The formation enhanced 86.2–100.9%, resulting in decreased cellular viability methane (by 37.5–50.5%) at 100 mg/g TS PP-MPs/NPs. Genome-centric metagenomic metatranscriptomic analyses suggested reassembly community structures, re-evolution functional traits, remodeling interspecies interactions. Specifically, shift methanogen consortia from hydrogenotrophic Methanofollis sp. acetoclastic Methanothrix soehngenii, primarily because latter's diverse ingestion patterns, electron bifurcation complexes, ROS-scavenging abilities. Downregulation genes associated with antioxidative defense systems (i.e., sodN, katA, osmC) ROS-driven redox signal transduction pathways (c-di-AMP phosphorylation signaling pathways) provided insights into ROS-induced dysregulation. Our findings enhance understanding ecological traits under MPs/NPs stressors, facilitating control toxicity stabilization AD processes.

Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a well-established technology for the sustainable conversion of agricultural organic by-products and waste into bioenergy. Temperature crucial optimizing methane production through inocula preservation reactor start-up in AD. The induced by temperature has rarely been assessed from an engineering perspective. There also limited exploration influence high-to-moderate transition on initiation This study employed continuous mesophilic AD reactors with potential applications to conduct revival tests. These tests evaluated activity sludge stored at different temperatures investigated impact high-temperature Additionally, we elucidated correlation between these assessments microbial diversity as well composition. results indicated that bacterial was higher inoculum 35 °C compared 15 °C, ensuring stable operation richness bacteria archaea remained during high temperatures. conducive enhancing methanogenic initiated 55 °C. continuously operated system showed significant differences composition its inoculum. Increased abundance Coriobacteriaceae Prevotellaceae led propionate butyrate accumulation, respectively, reducing operational capacity. Methanogenic were less diverse low-temperature preserved medium temperature. Streptococcaceae temperarure could promote stability. Hydrogenotrophic methanogens had competitive advantage due their prior exposure initiation, possibly influenced Thermotogaceae.
