This study systematically reviews the optimization techniques (OTs) and software tools (STs) in hybrid microgrid systems (HMGSs) to enhance efficiency, cost-effectiveness, energy reliability. An advanced Scopus search was conducted using core keywords related microgrids, renewable systems, various OTs STs, which identified 4134 relevant documents on OTs. These were classified into classical (16.87%), metaheuristic (47.12%), artificial intelligence (AI)-based methods (36.01%), highlighting dominance of metaheuristics growing role AI-driven approaches handling uncertainties real-time decision-making. Additionally, 2667 STs analyzed, identifying MATLAB/Simulink (65.34%) HOMER (22.08%) as most widely used for simulation, modeling, techno-economic analysis. identifies key research trends, highlights gaps strategies, emphasizes need AI integration, broader adoption open-source tools, scalable frameworks. By mapping evolution effectiveness it provides valuable insights researchers, policymakers, industry professionals, supporting development sustainable intelligent HMGS solutions.
