Background: Noise damage and its health effects have gained traction of researchers governments. However, challenges persist due to the paucity comprehensive studies integrating quietness naturalness into assessment urban sound quality.Goals: This study developed an innovative soundscape quality index that simultaneously assesses both in a soundscape. Accordingly, we conducted mapping, influential mechanisms analysis, identification priority zones for environment management.Approaches: We collected pressure level (SPL) raw audio data which was further computed normalized difference (NDSI). established dataset with 28 explanatory variables, including land use cover, built environment, vegetation characteristics, time. The random forest (RF) model adopted predict 10 indicators eight SPL-related index, NDSI, QNS (quietness soundscape) index. Crucially, utilized SHAP (SHapley Additive exPlanations) value interpret RF model.Findings: Spatial differences were evident, closely associated road networks vegetation, respectively, temporal variations also observed. top three variables affecting are distance major roads, (NDVI), proportion tree coverage. Moreover, interaction highlighted dual negative or synergistic promoting on from factors such as width, human disturbance, configurations, cover. Notably, these successfully applied six typical tourist attractions Xiamen city. Five types management considering based population density mapping. Interestingly, natural reserves highly matched city parks, high-risk mainly overlayed networks, potential those inner communities between streets.Significance: framework has proven effective exploring mechanisms, guiding environment.

The green transformation of the built environment is aimed at improving sustainability and can be supported by digitalization, which has become a significant tool to support supply, integration, management information throughout construction life cycle. In addition, climate change highly affects human comfort in different strategies should evaluated for adapting cities. This paper developed digital workflow integrating existing tools (i.e., Grasshopper, Ladybug, Honeybee, Dragonfly) evaluate how infrastructure affected thermal reducing UTCI. was applied typical historical urban context (Catania, South Italy), consisting square surrounded three-floor buildings. Three basic scenarios were created that depended on pavement material used environment: black stone (reference from Mount Etna), permeable pavement, grass. These three combined with strategies: tree pattern square, walls roofs surrounding buildings, integrations all these above-mentioned strategies. results demonstrated integration (a grass instead trees, roofs) increased UTCI more than 8 °C compared (black building envelope). However, this temperature reduction location body into evaporation rates vegetation. will useful designers effectiveness during early-design stage mitigating cities change.

Urban noise pollution extends into aquatic environments, influencing underwater ecosystems. This study examines the effectiveness of acoustic indicators in characterizing urban soundscapes using hydrophone recordings. Three indices, Acoustic Complexity Index (ACI), Diversity (ADI), and Normalized Difference Soundscape (NDSI), were analyzed to assess their ability distinguish anthropogenic natural sources. The results indicate that ACI tracks fluctuations, particularly from vehicles trams, while ADI primarily reflects transient environmental interferences. NDSI, designed differentiate biophony noise, proves unreliable settings, often misclassifying These findings highlight limitations traditional indices environments emphasize need for refined methods improve data interpretation. Thus, this aims understand indicators’ interactions with which is crucial enhancing monitoring mitigation strategies.

The security of the Earth system has been extensively discussed through concept planetary boundaries, which hypothesizes Anthropocene as crisis for pushing environmental variables beyond safe limits. Cities, burgeoning population centers, warrant heightened attention to issues surrounding boundaries and ecological security. While groundwork laid change detection, acoustic or soundscape perspective is rarely considered. This paper presents abundant empirical evidence supporting feasibility leveraging a valuable lens exploring ecosystem structures, functions, their contribution human well-being. Particularly, it proposes spatialized maps practical tools implement this innovative perspective. We elaborate on two key aspects: (i) reflection evolution, enabling evaluation interactions, ecosystem's functions; (ii) attribution providing cultural services, allowing assessment its impact health. Consequently, we propose paradigms: "security in soundscape" soundscape", thereby initiated "soundscape security". Furthermore, outline generalized pathways: monitoring, encompassing long-term strategies real-time tracking perception, involving detailed surveys investigate perception public participatory sensing large-scale services. argue that integrating considerations holds promise urban initiatives pursuit sustainable cities. Green areas in urban environments, such as parks and gardens, are known to provide benefits called “ecosystem services” the community. recreational spaces offer opportunities for physical activity, leading improved mental health of residents. For this reason, presence quality has be considered promoted sustainable planning, especially context contributing achievement cities. As biodiversity an area is indication its quality, soundecological indicators have been used assess natural areas. Due anthropogenic sounds areas, use these determine can questioned. However, vocal activity collectively singing birds during dawn chorus contributes soundscape, results a prominent biophonic component clearly seen yearly pattern. The through estimation Bird Dawn Chorus Strength potential means assessing green spaces. To demonstrate potential, pilot study presented here on annual temporal scale soundscape typical space.
