Lithium-ion batteries are essential for Europe's renewable energy transition. By 2030, the EU will need 18 times more lithium, and by 2050, 60 more. For that reason, Europe aims to increase domestic sourcing achieve nearly full self-sufficiency 2030. However, lithium mining has a high environmental footprint can have severe social impacts. This research examines socio-environmental implications of transition identifies leverage points alleviate tension between justice security. The Social, Technological, Economic, Environmental, Political framework was used systematically gather insights from experts representing various stakeholders on these issues. Subsequently, were compiled into fuzzy-cognitive map, creating system-based overview allow construction comparison four scenarios examining future its impacts environment local communities in Europe. reveals importance good governance avoid issues corruption geopolitical tensions with potential adverse impact society environment. alone is insufficient mitigate negative A circular economy, where recovered batteries, most favorable, reducing demand new material mining. holistic stresses increased government involvement, stakeholder alignment, dealing as vital aspects mitigating

An expanding array of transnational Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) standards has emerged to mitigate harms across critical minerals supply chains. This proliferation international, private governance is interacting with domestic, public regulations guiding mining activity in resource rich states. When requirements duplicate, overlap, or diverge they can create inconsistent processes, administrative burden, dilemmas through a patchwork basic components chain management (Cashore et al., 2021). Applying typology interactions between authority policy lithium Argentina, we argue that private/public rules are loosely complementary some respects independently coexisting others. Comparing rigorous standard, the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA), find both include similar provisions environmental protection participation . IRMA provides better protections indigenous peoples' participation, though it lacks significant enforcement mechanisms. Questions remain over sector's ability guarantee – practice rights other affected communities, protect ecosystems rush minerals. Resulting illustrate an increasingly crowded regulatory space indiscriminately presumes gaps, while privatizes accountability.

Green hydrogen is often presented as a transformative solution to the dual challenges of decarbonization and economic development. This article applies framework climate necropolitics interrogate contested spatialities underlying such “win-win” narratives. It does so through an extended case study Hyphen Hydrogen Energy, $10 billion green project planned for Lüderitz, Namibia. A remote town 20,000 in country with $12 annual GDP, Lüderitz initially appears be unlikely host site “industrial fuel future.” To explain this outcome, I first illustrate how discordant socio-spatial projects—including European energy security, Namibian industrialization, (sub)national developmentalism—have shaped both emergence legitimation construction abstracted space realization external ambitions. then draw on interviews, focus groups, ethnographic encounters residents place these projects specific context Lüderitz. My analysis demonstrates local interpretations are not by abstract promises abundance decarbonized development, but instead concrete experiences extractive violence displaced decarbonization. Analyzing findings necropolitics, argue that similar mega-projects enabled varied at times contradictory serve legitimize displace costs outcome inevitable though—energy transitions can otherwise, perspectives consider how. conclude discussing implications efforts pursue more equitable, just, place-based low-carbon futures.

In the past two decades, lithium has gained critical global importance as a transition metal. Under President Evo Morales (2006–2019), Bolivian government launched national extraction industry in Uyuni salt flat. However, efforts to develop industrial-scale of there have been beset by considerable delays. Focusing on period Morales' presidency, this article analyses perceptions and its amongst people living region around flat, specifically urban centres. state media official communication was presented 'clean' 'future-oriented' activity, distinct from traditional mining practices. Public being conventional practices were also rooted collective memories colonial neoliberal exploitation Bolivia's wealth foreigners. Lithium therefore associated with shift towards decolonial future that expected generate wealth. By end while still believed clean future-oriented nature extraction, they no longer ability or local benefits production.
