Mulching suppresses weeds, improves soil biology, and increases physical or bioactive fruit yield in orchards. However, there is no information on its impact calafate (Berberis microphylla G. Forst.) orchards, which produce berries with high antioxidant content. To address this gap, 2021, an experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of 5 years mulching soil, plants, fruit. Four treatments were established: mulch (control), geotextile, oat straw, hazelnut shell. All mulches suppressed weeds (43%) maintained more moisture (5%) than control. Soil microbial activity increased only shell compared control, up 46%. Only straw basal respiration urease 31% 15% Oat produced highest 0.44 t ha−1, while lowest by control 0.1 0.15 respectively. The geotextile 0.35 ha−1 differences between treatments. ORAC capacity higher shell, a mean 3272 µmol TE 100 g−1. Hazelnut recommended improve biological functions

Plastic mulch is a commonly employed technique in agriculture to enhance crop production. Given the persistence of plastic residues soil, bioplastics offer potential alternative. Unfortunately, little known about medium-term consequences both and bioplastic mulches on soil properties. This study aimed assess their replacement To this aim, impact conventional (polyethylene, CP) biodegradable (BP) soil’s abiotic (pH, water content, total organic carbon nitrogen contents) biotic (microbial biomass, microbial respiration, enzymatic activities microarthropod communities) properties after 2 years exposure (T1) 3 (T2) 6 (T3) months was investigated. Moreover, uncovered soils were assessed as control. The results highlighted that samples more significantly impacted by time than different kinds mulches. (T2 T3) decreased content C increased biomass activities; moreover, changed community composition with decrease Collembola an increase Oribatida Gamasida, especially covered Further investigations are needed better understand long-term biota order prove ecological implications transitioning sustainable alternatives.
