Abstract Ecosystem function and variability of eastern boundary upwelling systems is linked to the population dynamics coastal pelagic fish. Developing models species over many decades has unique challenges, can benefit from integration multiple disparate sources fisheries resource survey information. Northern anchovy (Engraulis mordax) are vital trophic links in food web California Current Ecosystem. Previous studies this had relatively narrow temporal ranges or focused on a single data source (e.g. larval abundance data). Here, we combine sets that have informed previous studies, into one integrated statistical catch-at-age model estimate extended biomass recruitment trends, providing comprehensive account 1965–2021. The snow crab is an iconic species in the Bering Sea that supports economically important fishery and undergoes extensive monitoring management. Since 2018, more than 10 billion have disappeared from eastern Sea, population collapsed to historical lows 2021. We link this collapse a marine heatwave during 2018 2019. Calculated caloric requirements, reduced spatial distribution, observed body conditions suggest starvation played role collapse. mortality event appears be one of largest reported losses motile macrofauna heatwaves globally.

Abstract The implementation of ecosystem management requires modelling within the context a natural resource process. Ecopath with Ecosim (EwE) is most widely used platform for investigating dynamics marine ecosystems, but has played limited role in fisheries and multi‐sector decision‐making. We review 10 case studies that demonstrate use EwE to support operational management. models are being inform tactical decision‐making other ocean sectors, as well identify key trade‐offs, develop appropriate policy objectives, reconcile conflicting legislative mandates variety ecosystems. suggest following criteria enhance management: (1) clear objective can be addressed through modelling; (2) an important trade‐off receptive amenable evaluation; (3) accessible well‐documented model follows best practices; (4) early iterative engagement among scientists, stakeholders, managers; (5) integration collaborative process; (6) multi‐model approach; (7) rigorous Our suggests existing frameworks much or more limitation than technical issues related data availability uncertainty. Abstract Ecosystem‐based fisheries management strives to account for species interactions and ecosystem processes in natural resource conservation. In this context, ecosystem‐wide caps on total fishery catches have been proposed as one tool manage multispecies with an approach. However, determining effective is complicated because fish stock production influenced by environmental conditions, interactions, fishing. Consequently, the implementation of frameworks remains uncommon. We investigated whether should climate variability predator–prey dynamics achieve objectives complex marine ecosystems. considered example Gulf Alaska (United States), a North Pacific large where annual groundfish are managed using “optimum yield” cap 800,000 t. simulated yield 12 most abundant commercially valuable stocks under selected fishing scenarios end‐to‐end model (Atlantis), which accounts dynamics. found that was never projected exceed mt optimum across mortalities. Projected change led decreased yield, predation from underexploited predator arrowtooth flounder ( Atheresthes stomias ) foregone catches. Groundfish removals had negative indirect effects predators, despite exceeding cap, highlighting ineffective may not protect non‐target species. These results suggest currently used be too high constrain future low exploitation rates predators. propose reviewed when productivity, or change.

Abstract The development of wind energy on the US Northeast Continental Shelf (NES) may preclude resource-monitoring programmes from continuing in their original study designs. We considered spatial requirements developers and autocorrelation resident species as a means to inform survey mitigation. NES industry were respect delineation settled lease areas. suggest access metrics ranging 8 21 km representing interquartile range chord distances across Using data concentrating commercial with stock assessment requirements, we computed indices autocorrelation. Tests using Moran’s I join counts statistics significant (p < 0.05) for most species, suggesting high level correlation distributions. To characterize scalar extent correlation, variograms fit estimate physical correlated catches. These spatially well beyond distance derived area shapes. Sampling by gears has potential producing accurate depictions distributions abundance despite restrictions areas place sampling

Marine heatwaves can have rapid and wide-reaching biological economic impacts. We explored the effects of a recent severe marine heatwave on Steller sea lions in Gulf Alaska Southeast using biennial counts pups non-pups from aerial surveys terrestrial sites between 2013 2019. combined count data with bioenergetic model to explore potential lion responses prey populations. Pup production was anomalously low eastern central 2017 following end 2016, 33.5 17.4% reduction 2015 values respectively. Based energetic costs pregnancy lactation, these reductions pup represent an average difference 6121 metric tons 2017. Non-pup were No detected western Gulf, although they could been masked by variability estimates. Such changes non-pup abundance had induce predation pressure order thousands tens prey, even when assumed persist for relatively short time (1 yr or less). In addition short-term effects, declining occurred 2014-2016 heatwave, suggesting more lasting populations top-down forcing regions.
